Sonu Nigam is one of the most loved singers in Bollywood. He debuted in the 1990s and has been winning hearts since then. He has lent his soulful voice to sing iconic songs like Sandese Aate Hai, Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin, and Tumse Milke Dil Ka. Sonu is one of the few singers who has managed to stay at the top for over three decades and has collaborated with many legends, including AR Rahman. They began working together in the mid-1990s, but despite their association, Sonu doesn't shy away from sharing his unfiltered opinion about the music maestro, and his recent revelations have left stunned fans.
Sonu Nigam and AR Rahman have worked together for years and delivered hits like Satrangi Re, Chhoti Si Aasha, and Aayo Re Sakhi. Sonu has mostly focused on playback singing, while AR Rahman has sung and composed music. In a new interview with O2 India, Sonu was asked to share his opinion on AR Rahman as a singer. For those unaware, the latter has given his voice to some of his most popular songs like Khwaja Mere Khwaja, Tere Bin, and more.
But Sonu mentioned that AR Rahman isn't a very trained singer. Consequently, even the music composer won't call himself a great singer because he knows the truth, leaving little for others to say. However, AR Rahman's voice has a wonderful tone, and given his knowledge of composing music, he has a good understanding of sur. In Sonu's words:
"“Obviously, he is not a very trained singer. The tone of his voice is very nice. He wouldn’t call himself a great singer, so what can we say? He knows his texture is very beautiful but he has never claimed to be a great singer. He is a great composer so obviously he is always in sur. The main thing is to be in sur. What is the point of a good voice texture if one is not in sur? His voice might not be great but he is always in sur because he is AR Rahman.”
One of the most successful collaborations of Sonu Nigam and AR Rahman was for the film, Jodhaa Akbar. Sonu revealed that as he sang the song, Inn Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein, in the film, the music composer gave him the freedom to compose a small part of it towards the end. Later, R Rahman liked Sonu's work and kept it in the final song, which made the singer happy. Sharing his thoughts on it, Sonu said:
"He is quite secure. He is not someone who will say that I have to do it."
Sonu Nigam shared in an old interview with the same portal that AR Rahman is a good person but maintains distance in his personal life due to his detached nature. They worked together for Subhash Ghai's Yuvvraaj, but Sonu mentioned that he disliked the song he sang and felt the entire album was 'pretty average.' He mentioned that he doesn't want to talk about it because he won't be able to lie and praise it, yet all the songs from the album were 'bekaar.'
