Soundarya, born Soowmya Sathyanarayana, was one of the most adored actresses in the Indian film fraternity. The actress predominantly worked in Telugu cinema but has also spread her wings to Kannada, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam films. While she had established herself as an actress and had a bright future ahead, a tragic plane ride took her away from the world at the young age of 32.
Soundarya was born on July 18, 1972, in a town located in the Kolar district and was raised in Bengaluru by her parents, K.S. Sathyanarayana and Majula. The actress had left her intermediate after her first year. Soon after, she entered the film industry at the age of 20, and the rest was history.
Soundarya made her debut in the film industry with S. Siddalingaiah's Kannada movie, Baa Nanna Preethisu in April 1992. She made another film, Gandharva, in July of the same year, which became a major hit. Following the success of her first two films, the actress became a big name in the film industry and was a popular pick for lead roles in Kannada films. However, her big break came with her Tamil debut in the 1993 drama film, Ponnumani alongside Karthik and Shivakumar.
The actress went on to become one of the most loved actresses in the film industry after she gained commercial recognition with Hello Brother in 1994. She later played award-winning roles in Ammoru and had a spectacular total of eleven releases in 1995 alone. The actress moved on to work with legends like Kamal Hassan, Prabhudeva, Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan.
Soundarya became a household name in northern India with her performance as 'Radha' in one of the most-watched films in the history of Hindi cinema, Sooryavansham. Her pairing opposite Amitabh Bachchan became one of the most loved on-screen couples. Her elegance, simplicity and timeless beauty captured the hearts of the Hindi-speaking audience.

The rising star of the country, Soudarya, soon fell off. The actress met her tragic end, and her last signed project was shelved. She was to essay the role of 'Draupadi' in the film and had even shot the first seventeen minutes of the film. Her last release was Apthamitra, for which she received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress Kannada posthumously in 2004.
While not much is known about the actress' personal life, we know that Soundarya was married to a software engineer. The actress got married on April 23, 2003, and was reportedly seven months pregnant at the time of the unfortunate crash. The actress passed away on April 17, 2004, a week before her first marriage anniversary.
According to media reports, the actress had boarded a plane, Cessna 180, on the morning of April 17, 2004, in Bengaluru with her brother, Amarnath. However, before the plane had acquired the required speed, it reached a height of 150 feet. It crashed nose down on the campus of Gandhi Krishi Vigyan Kendra of the University of Agricultural Science and burst into flames. If the reports are to be believed, she was en route to a political campaign event in Karimnagar for the Bharatiya Janata Party and Telugu Desam Party at the time of the crash.
