One of the best Kannada films of the year, Su from So, broke all the records and became the highest-grossing film of 2025. The film, written and directed by JP Thuminad, was released in theatres on July 25, 2025, and is currently streaming on JioCinema (formerly Jio Hotstar). The film, which was made on a modest budget of Rs. 4.5 crore grossed over Rs. 122 crore and is still making business. As the film is making headlines, let us read on to know about its ending.
The film opens with the cultural surroundings of a place like Marlur with a social landscape. The film portrays a world that exists in the village, characterised by a close-knit community. 'Ashoka', the titular character played by JP Thuminad, is a painter by profession who is in love with a girl, 'Chaitra', played by Tanishka Shetty.
The plot begins when Ashoka peeped into the washroom of a village household, where an elderly woman was bathing. While he tries to make a quick escape, Ashoka gets caught, and to save himself, he starts acting; from here, the real drama begins. Seeing Ashoka’s act, the villagers feel that he is possessed.
Soon, villagers felt that Ashoka was possessed by Sulochana from Someshwara and needed to be exorcised. But when the villagers’ efforts to cleanse Ashoka become too much for him to handle, the actor decides to come clean, but nobody believes him. But when Ashoka meets Sulochana’s daughter, Bhanu, his life takes a U-turn.
When 'Ashoka' met Sulochana’s daughter, 'Bhanu', he realised the struggles in her life. After her mother’s death, Bhanu was subjected to sexual taunts by the villagers. She was objectified and lived a life of despair. In one of the scenes, where Bhanu pours her heart out to ‘her mother’ in 'Ashoka', he realises how wrong he was throughout his life.

His usual behaviour of passing sexual comments on a girl, peeping when a woman is changing clothes, is exactly the thing that has traumatised 'Bhanu' throughout her life. It is at this point that 'Ashoka' takes on Sulochana’s role and tries to help 'Bhanu'. He frees Bhanu from the exploitation and brings her to Marlur, a place where she belongs.
As soon as Ashoka settles Bhanu with ‘Ravi Anna’, the villagers are convinced that Sulochana will bow to leave Ashoka’s body as she found her peace. On the other hand, Ashoka knows when to bring Sulochana back as a weapon, not just to fight the demons of society but also to get himself out of a problem.
Su From So is not just a comic horror drama, but is a satirical take on the society where patriarch prevails. The film highlights the deep-rooted misogyny and how a woman believed that it was a privilege to have her voice acknowledged. The entrenched patriarchy shown in the film shows how women are just a source to objectify and nothing more.
While the villagers believed Sulochana had left Ashoka’s body, he took advantage of whatever had happened and still made people believe that he was possessed.
