Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC) is one of the longest-running shows on Indian television, successfully entertaining audiences for over 17 years. The beloved sitcom revolves around the everyday lives of residents in the fictional ‘Gokuldham Society’, showcasing their humorous misadventures and heartfelt camaraderie. Actress Sunayana Fozdar, who plays ‘Anjali Mehta’, fondly known as ‘Anjali Bhabhi’, recently shared a touching revelation about the show’s deeper impact, highlighting how it brings comfort and healing to people during difficult times.
In a recent conversation with The Times of India, Sunayana reflected on the lasting impact that TMKOC leaves on the audience, given its relatable characters and exploration of real-life problems through a comic lens. The actress explained that the bond viewers share with the characters is beyond numbers or fleeting trends. She was quoted as saying:
“I think ye show logon ke dil me basta hai aur characters bhi logon ke dil me baste hai. Ye aisi cheez hai ke number game se hatkar hai. Waise bhi bohot aise log hai jo 17 saal se ye show dekh rahe hai aur naye log bhi jude hai show se. Bhagwan ki kripa hai, I think sab par.”
There is something unbelievably special for an artist to find a show that not only resonates well with the viewers but also heals them, helping them through difficult times. For Sunayana, it was a deeply emotional moment when she noticed during a hospital visit that TMKOC was played for patients in almost every room. The fact that patients and families turn to the show during some of life’s most challenging moments is proof of its deeper emotional value. In Sunayana’s words:
“I was talking to someone recently, and I mentioned that during a visit to the hospital, I noticed that this show is played in almost every room. Seeing that made me feel like, in our own way, this is how we’re contributing to the world—you know, by bringing a bit of comfort and joy to people even in tough times.”
A few months ago, Dilip Joshi, who has been essaying the iconic ‘Jethalal Gada’ in the sitcom since Day 1, reflected on the massive success of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, even after over 17 years. Despite many original characters getting replaced, the show has maintained impressive TRP ratings over the years. Reflecting on the sheer comfort of knowing that the show has become an emotion for millions of viewers, the actor told TOI:
“Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has become more than just a show, it’s an emotion for millions. The love and support we receive are truly overwhelming. I am deeply grateful to God and believe there is some divine power and the blessings of our audience that have kept us going strong for 17 years. In today’s era, where many shows wrap up within just a few months, it’s incredible that Taarak Mehta continues to thrive. Over the past 16-17 years, several shows have come and gone, even on SAB TV, but this one remains a favourite, constantly receiving love and appreciation from viewers.”
