Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor teamed up for Shashank Khaitan's directorial film, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumar. The film also stars Sanya Malhotra and Rohit Saraf in parallel lead roles. The project is helmed by Dharma, who stays true to its template of big, fat, and extravagant sets, with songs that make the project look even fancier. It is worth mentioning that it is Varun and Janhvi's second collaboration.
Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari revolves around four young people and how their lives get embroiled together in the quest to find love. The film begins with 'Sunny', played by Varun Dhawan, creating a Baahubali-style setup to propose to his lady love, 'Ananya', played by Sanya Malhotra. However, he was left dejected when he found out that she loves 'Vikram' (Rohit Saraf).
'Sunny' is not one of those who will let his love go without putting up a fight. So, he hatches a plan and teams up with 'Tulsi Kumari', played by Janhvi Kapoor, who is the ex-girlfriend of 'Vikram'. So, 'Tulsi' and 'Sunny' act as a couple to ruin their ex-lovers' grand wedding. However, while executing their plan to get back their lover, they fell in love with each other. But things turn a bit confusing when 'Ananya' and 'Vikram' realise their true feelings for their exes and decide to return to them.
The rom-com is a light-hearted, fun film with high-octane entertainment. With its vibrant colours and large sets, it makes it a true big-screen film. The romantic drama with hilarious lines can make everyone laugh. The witty writing and perfect dialogue that pays ode to SRK's Chak De monologue. Apart from the laughter, the emotional scenes also hit the right chord.
The movie also addresses patriarchy, class conflict and gender roles with a gentle nudge. However, the second half of the film is quite predictable and looks like a daily Indian drama. And some points it tends to feel superficial, and the dialogues look lame and even forced, with one-liners. The climax surprises but fails to leave a mark.
