Suriya Once Revealed Regretting His Decision To Reject 'Bahubali, Said, 'We All Make Mistakes..'

Suriya Sivakumar is known for his Tamil films, which became blockbuster hits and made him popular all over the country. Even though the star has yet to work in mainstream Bollywood movies, his immense popularity has made him a pan-Indian celebrity. Moreover, many of his hits were remade in Hindi and starred top actors such as Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, and more.

However, Suriya had let go of one of the biggest film projects ever, which went on to break box office records. The film was S.S. Rajamouli's Baahubali, released in 2015. The actor had once opened up about this mistake and expressed his regret over letting this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity go.

Suriya was offered a role in Baahubali by S.S. Rajamouli, but he rejected it

Suriya has primarily worked in the Tamil industry, but he has also worked on a few Telugu projects. One of the most sought-after Telugu directors, S.S Rajamouli, had approached him with a role for his upcoming project, Baahubali: The Beginning. In a press interview, Suriya revealed that he had rejected the offer since he was not convinced by the character. The actor has not yet revealed what role he was offered. Expressing his regret over letting the chance go, Suriya said:

"We all make mistakes in life and even I did. I missed out on a big opportunity to work with S.S. Rajamouli. But I'm ready to do a film with him if he considers it."

Suriya rejected Baahubali, but it went on to break records as the highest-grossing Indian film ever

Suriya had really let go of an opportunity that was hard to come by. Baahubali: The Beginning earned Rs. 600 crores worldwide. Meanwhile, its sequel, Baahubali: The Conclusion, tripled the amount and grossed Rs. 1800 crores globally. The franchise became a mega-blockbuster hit, and all of its stars and characters became iconic. Since the whole cast of the first film reprised their roles in the sequel, no new actors were introduced into the franchise. Hence, by rejecting Baahubali: The Beginning, the Tamil superstar had let go of his chance to work in Baahubali: The Conclusion too.

S.S. Rajamouli credited Suriya for inspiring him to go beyond Telugu cinema

S.S. Rajamouli has been credited many times for creating the phenomenon of pan-Indian movies by taking his film, Baahubali beyond the Telugu film industry and making a movie for all of India to enjoy. But, in a pre-release event, the filmmaker credited Suriya for inspiring him to push his film into other regions and languages. Talking about how the Tamil superstar inspired him, S.S. Rajamouli said:

“During Ghajini, Suriya would come here (Hyderabad) and promote his films. I would tell producers and actors that the way he grew close to the Telugu audience was a case study. That we must push films in other regions too, gain the love of the Tamil audience. Suriya, you are my inspiration for the pan-India film market.”

Suriya had expressed his desire to work with S.S. Rajamouli again

In the same pre-release event, Suriya and S.S. Rajamouli, both lamented over the fact that they could not work together in a film. The director said that he respected the fact that the actor chose to go after the story rather than blindly choosing the filmmaker. Rajamouli also stated that it was him who had missed the opportunity to work with Suriya. Meanwhile, the Tamil actor expressed his desire to work with the Baahubali director again, and said:

“In a family if an elder sibling does well, the rest of the family flourishes because you show the way. This journey started long back, sir. I am shamelessly saying I missed the train. I'm still standing at the railway station, and I hope I get it sometime.”

Suriya's new release, Retro, has crossed the Rs. 200 crore mark at the box office

Suriya's most recent release, Retro, is a gangster drama that has drawn many cinema-goers to the screen. The film stars Pooja Hegde and Prakash Raj, with Suriya as the main lead. The film was reportedly made with a budget of Rs. 60 crores and has already amassed Rs. 235 crores at the box office within just three weeks. Even though the film has received mixed reactions from both the audience and the critics, the box office collections show that it is a commercial hit.
