When Taylor Swift released the track list for The Life of a Showgirl, many fans wondered if track 6, Ruin the Friendship was about Blake Lively, given their ongoing rift amid the actress's lawsuit and Taylor being stuck in the middle of it. However, it seems like the track is definitely not about Blake.
After a careful listen, it seems that Ruin the Friendship is about Taylor Swift's high school self having a crush on a boy who already has a girlfriend, similar to her most beloved song, You Belong With Me. However, she suggests that in this song that her love was not reciprocated, unlike the end of the music video of the previous song, when she sings, "Your smile, miles wide, And it was not an invitation, Should've kissed you anyway."
The songwriter elaborates how it was convenient as the girlfriend was away, and she should have taken the chance. The song once again evokes the imagery of a Prom or some other high school dance as she sang, "Wilted corsage dangles from my wrist." Taylor further mentions that she wouldn't want to 'ruin the friendship' and that 'staying friends is safe'. However, she appears to be unsure now as she stated, 'doesn't mean you should.'
Fans had a pretty good reason to believe that the song was about Blake Lively. The actress and Taylor Swift had been extremely good friends, with Taylor announcing Blake's children's names with her songs, and being spotted on girls' nights. However, things took a turn for the worse when Taylor discovered that Blake had been using her for 'clout' and to leverage her dealings with Justin Baldoni, according to Page Six.
Fans believe that the song may have been about Nathan Johnson, a high school sophomore who passed away in 2006 while driving to football practice in his Jeep in Hendersonville, Tennessee, where Swift grew up. According to Taylor's song, Ruin the Friendship, she leaves school but is forced to come back because the boy she had a crush on has passed away. The song can be quoted as saying:

"When I left school, I lost track of you. Abigail called me with the bad news. Goodbye...and we’ll never know why. It was not an invitation. But I flew home anyway. With so much left to say. It was not convenient, no. But I whispered at the grave. 'Should’ve kissed you anyway.'"
While Nathan and Taylor didn't attend the same school, according to reports by Baptist Press, the two could have crossed paths when he played against her school's team. Additionally, like Taylor, Nathan also had a gift for music and was part of the band called Through a Glass, which was being scouted by record labels in Nashville. While it is unclear who the subject is, it is most definitely not about Blake Lively, as the song is a sweet tribute to a romance that could have been, as she sings:
"My advice is always ruin the friendship. Better that than regret it for all time."
