Why Did Thalapathy Vijay's Wife, Sangeetha File For Divorce? Accuse Him Of Infidelity At 51

Thalapathy Vijay and Sangeetha Sornalingam's marriage has hit a rough patch after 25 years of marriage. As per reports, Sangeetha is the one who had filed for divorce in the Chengalpattu Family Court. The couple got married in 1999, and it came as a shock as Sangeetha made startling accusations against Thalapathy Vijay. 

Why did Sangeetha Sornalingam head for divorce after 27 years of marriage?

As per several reports, Sangeetha Sornalingam claims that Vijay has allegedly been involved in an extramarital relationship with an actress. A copy of the divorce petition has been circulating on the internet. It has been filed under Section (1)(a), (b), (d) and Sections 36 & 37 of the Special Marriage Act 1954. These sections cover reasons such as adultery, cruelty and desertion, which are valid grounds to seek divorce. It is worth mentioning that these sections deal with court procedures and involve maintenance and other related legal formalities in divorce. 

A part of the petition claims that the respondent Vijay was involved in an extramarital affair with an actress, which has caused his wife deep emotional pain and mental suffering. It is termed as a violation of the marital trust. The hearing in the case is scheduled for April 20, 2026. The petition can be read as:

"The Respondent (Vijay) was involved in an adulterous relationship with an actress. This caused her deep emotional pain and mental suffering, amounting to betrayal and violation of marital trust."

Sangeetha, in her divorce plea, has also requested the right of residence at her matrimonial house and permanent alimony from Vijay Thalapathy. It is worth mentioning that Sangeetha is a social worker and an entrepreneur. Also, Sangeetha seems to be in no mood for reconciliation or talks as she wants the marriage to be dissolved. Vijay has not yet responded to the plea or to the matter.

For the unversed, Vijay and Sangeetha's relationship was no less than a film's tale. Initially, Sangeetha was Vijay's fan, and she left her home in the UK to meet her idol in Chennai in the late 1990s. The meeting changed everything for Vijay and Sangeetha. The relationship, which was of a fan and a star, turned into something significant. Despite religious differences, the two got married as per the Special Marriage Act. 

For the unversed, Vijay was born into a Christian family, and Sangeetha was raised as a Hindu, but their love won over all odds. The couple has been married for 27 years and is blessed with two children, Jason Sanjay, who is 25 years old, and Divya Saasha, who is 20 years old. 

During the start of their relationship, Sangeetha would often accompany Vijay at his promotional events and award functions. But with time, she stopped it altogether and started keeping a low profile. She also remained absent from Vijay's political rallies to float TVK.
