Vivek Oberoi On Shifting To Business After Film Opportunities Dropped For Him: 'That Was My Income'

Vivek Oberoi is undoubtedly one of the most talented actors in Bollywood, having a career of more than a decade now. Once known as the chocolate-boy back in the 2000s, the actor metamorphosised his looks and skills and went onto essay versatile roles in a number of films. However, despite being massively successful and having a huge fan base, there was a time when he was cornered in Bollywood, as a result of which he lost out on significant number of opportunities. Interestingly, it was his business acumen which helped him to manage his finances during such difficult times.

Vivek Oberoi recalls his first silly venture into business as a 15 year old boy

In a recent interaction with ABP Live, Vivek Oberoi opened up about his unheard talents in the field of business, something which turned saviour for him after getting blacklisted in Bollywood. The actor walked down the memory lane and shared how at the age of 15, he struck up an immature and silly plan of business, where he would use his pocket money and spend it all in planning dates for girls whom he liked in a college. Expressing how he had a clash of words with his father, Suresh Oberoi, who advised him to use money judiciously, the actor said:

“My father scolded me, and asked me to use money judiciously, be more responsible. I was 15, my ego was hurt, and I told my mother that I didn’t want my father’s money, main khud sambhalunga. I stuck to it and didn’t take money from my father, but I needed money to attend college, pay for tea and rickshaw travels. That’s when I accidentally started working, did a small voice gig, compered shows and started earning a bit from there.”

Vivek reveals he build his first stock-market portfolio at the age of 16

Moving on with his narration, Vivek Oberoi revealed how he saved up his own money to go abroad and complete his further studies. It was after he returned, when he started to try his hands in acting. Moreover, Vivek revealed that it was merely at the age of 16-17, when he build his stock market portfolio, started investing in them, and even got trained under stock market brokers. Vivek also spilled beans on setting up his first business in Bangalore. In his words:

“Once I started earning more I started investing in stock market, I trained with brokers for that. I started my stock market portfolio when I was 16- 17 (years old). Then I did some commodity trading. I was 19 when I first set up my business in Whitefield, Bangalore. I sold my stake at 21 and went to New York for further studies.”

Vivek Oberoi claims it was business which helped him during his dry period in Bollywood

Continuing with his line of thought, Vivek Oberoi shared how his acumen for business turned saviour for him in due time, when he faced a dry spell in his film career. Well, the actor, after his feud with Salman Khan, was boycotted by many in Bollywood, due to which he didn’t get liberal opportunities of work. However, following the pressure of running his own family and putting food to the table, it was Vivek’s business that helped him out. Vivek Oberoi said:

“When I started struggling in Bollywood, when I started facing difficulties even after being a successful actor… I was facing challenges even after proving my skills, there was a different kind of pressure when I wasn’t getting offered any films. That was my source of income — I was running my house, charitable foundation with the money I earned through my business and acting in movies, doing events and making appearances, I paid my staff with it too.”

Towards the end of the interview, Vivek Oberoi spilled beans on another trait of his personality, as he shared his dedication towards philanthropy.
