Washington Sundar was born on October 5, 1999, in Chennai. His father was Mani Sundar. Washington Sundar was named after an ex-Army officer, PD Washington, who was also his father's mentor. For the unversed, Mani Sundar was also a 'Ranji probable’ and played from 1992 to 1993. Well, Mani was from a humble background, and it was PD Washington, his mentor, and neighbour, who helped him in education and his cricket games as well.

And it was for PD Washington that Mani ensured a job in the Tax department from sports quota. And thus, out of respect and gratitude, Mani named his son Washington. While there is no specific data about Sundar's mom, he has a sister, M Shailaja. For the unversed, M Shailaja is also a cricketer, who represented the Tamil Nadu Women’s cricket team in domestic cricket.

In an interview with Reddif, M Shailaja revealed what kind of equation her brother has with their mom. She said that while Sundar is calm in the fields, he remains relaxed at home.
