What Is The New Format Of Survivor Season 50? Will Fans Decide Contestants Journey In The Show?

The most loved CBS competition series, Survivor, is back with season 50. The new season premieres on February 25, 2026, at 8 p.m. PT/ET, and the episodes will be dropped weekly at the same time. The show, launched in 2000, has completed its 49 seasons. However, the latest season’s format has undergone a complete makeover.

What has changed in Survivor Season 50?

The host and showrunner, Jeff Probst, revealed that the format of the show’s 50th season will be determined by viewers’ votes. After three rounds, the fans will decide everything about the show, from the tribe’s colour to whether they will get rice during the 26 days. Fans cast their opinions on whether or not players should have to earn their supplies.

Not just this, idols, advantages, challenges and tribe swaps were also included in the voting categories. Speaking about the same to Parade, Probst said:

“We’re not in charge. I’m used to having control. Like, ‘This is when an idol is going into the game, and this is how it works. And this is the new twist we’re putting to the game, and this is how it works.’ "

The season is called Survivor: In the Hands of the Fans because it's the first time the fans will be able to vote on the game, twists and advantages, challenges, and, mainly, production choices. 

Survivor 50 will have the largest group in the show’s history

As per the new format, Survivor 50: In the Hands of Fans will feature 24 players, the largest group since Season 49. The makers revealed that they intended to limit themselves to 20, but to ensure an even number in each tribe, they decided to raise it to 24. But the larger castaway doesn’t mean the show will have a longer time frame. Survivor 50 would still have the 26-day timeline.

One contestant will face elimination in the first three days

According to a Parade report, only one contestant will be voted out during the first three days of the game. The show will have different voting timelines, but those timelines will only be determined after fans’ votes are counted. The show’s makers also revealed that they have to wait and see all the elements before figuring out a contestant’s elimination.

Survivor 50 will have many celebrity cameos

The fan-favourite show will not only feature former players making their comeback, but will also feature multiple celebrity cameos. The first trailer for In the Hands of Fans revealed many celebrities set to appear on the show. Celebs like Zac Brown and Jimmy MrBeast Donaldson made appearances, and a contestant was heard saying that his fate in the game would be decided by Jimmy Fallon.

Survivor 50’s players would not know the results despite fans’ votes

Even though the fans have cast their vote before filming, the contestants won't know about it until they reach Fiji. As per Probst, the mystery element would encourage the contestants to think outside the box. Talking about the same to Parade, Probst said:

“I think what’s interesting for the player, at least the clever player, is knowing that nobody knows. So I can tell you anything I want as a fellow player. They could make up anything they want."
