The sudden and mysterious demise of singer, Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most beloved cultural icons, had left millions of fans across India and beyond in disbelief. Known for his soulful voice and deep connection with the Assamese identity, Zubeen's untimely death occured Singapore on September 19, 2025. The singer had travelled to attend the Fourth Annual North East India Festival, organised by Shyamkanu Mahanta and his firm. While initial reports described the tragedy as an accidental drowning, subsequent revelations have raised serious doubts about the circumstances surrounding the singer's final moments.

SIT uncovers Rs. 1 crore in Zubeen Garg’s security staff’s bank accounts

The ongoing investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has now uncovered a major financial irregularity, a cash transaction of nearly Rs. 1 crore in the accounts of two of Zubeen Garg’s personal security officers (PSOs), have been found. This discovery has deepened the mystery surrounding the singer’s death, suggesting some possible financial motives or hidden dealings linked to those close to him.

Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has officially requested that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax Department examine the financial angle of the case. Speaking to the media, Sarma stated that he hopes the central agencies will take cognisance of this recent discovery.

Non-compliance from key witnesses in the Zubeen Garg case has raised suspicion

In a further twist, the Chief Minister also revealed that seven individuals who were present with Zubeen Garg in Singapore during his final hours have failed to respond to CID summons. Only one person, Rupkamal Kalita, who was reportedly on the yacht when Zubeen died, has agreed to appear before investigators.

Sarma confirmed that Rupkamal Kalita will be coming to Guwahati on Tuesday, he also expressed his hope that Rupkamal’s cooperation might encourage others to also come forward. The reluctance of other key witnesses has only fueled public speculation about what truly transpired the day when Zubeen died.

The state CID of Assam is currently leading the probe after more than 60 FIRs were filed across Assam against Shyamkanu Mahanta, the festival’s chief organiser, along with nearly ten others, including Zubeen's manager, Siddharth Sharma and band members, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta. All four have been arrested and remanded to 14 days in police custody each, as investigators attempt to piece together the singer’s final hours and identify if there was any foul play.

Zubeen Garg’s bandmate made explosive claims against his manager

Adding to the growing controversy, one of Zubeen’s bandmates has made some shocking accusations against his manager, Siddharth Sharma, the bandmate alleged that the manager may have poisoned the singer. The bandmate claimed that Zubeen was ‘frothing at the mouth and nose’ before his death, and that Siddharth ignored these alarming symptoms, dismissing them as acid reflux. Witnesses further alleged that Siddharth was heard saying “Jabo de, jabo de” (let him go), a statement that has since ignited public outrage and intensified calls for justice.
