The sudden death of Zubeen Garg, the voice behind the blockbuster hit song, Ya Ali, has left everyone mourning. For the uninitiated, Zubeen passed away on September 19, 2025, after a tragic scuba diving accident in Singapore. He went to Singapore to perform at the 4th North East India festival, which was scheduled on September 20, 2025. Multiple reports claimed that the iconic singer died because he was not wearing a life jacket. Now, Zubeen’s wife, Garima Saikia, refuted the claims about the scuba diving accident and revealed the real cause of death.
Speaking to The Times of India, Garima Saikia, the wife of Zubeen Garg, revealed that the Ya Ali singer along with seven or eight others, went to a Singapore island on a yacht. She mentioned that drummers, Shekhar and Sidhartha, were also present in the group. She also revealed that all of the group members were wearing life jackets. However, after her husband, went to swim again, he suffered a seizure attack. In her words:
"They swam together and returned to the shore on the yacht. All of them were wearing life jackets. But Zubeen went to swim again and suffered a seizure attack."
Garima shared that this was not the first time, Zubeen suffered a seizure attack. Earlier, on several occasions, he faced an attack, but he survived it. She mentioned that in Singapore, when the other members suspected something unusual, they rescued Zubeen immediately. He was also kept in the ICU for two hours at the Singapore General Hospital. Garima said:
"He suffered seizure attacks on several occasions earlier but escaped death. Other team members rescued him after seeing something unusual. He was kept in the ICU at Singapore General Hospital for about two hours."
Recently, in a press conference, Assam CM, Himanta Biswa Sarma, shared that a video featuring Zubeen Garg has surfaced online. The Ya Ali singer was first seen jumping into the water while wearing a life jacket and returned to the yacht after 1 minute 26 seconds, as shown in the video. However, the Assam CM added that this was not the full story. According to a PTI report, Zubeen again went into the water without wearing the life jacket, which resulted in his untimely demise. Himanta said, "Zubeen died while swimming without a life jacket."
Zubeen’s untimely death at the age of 52, has sent shockwaves throughout the nation. The event organisers, including Shyamkanu Mahanta and his team, issued a statement disclosing that the iconic singer passed away on September 19, 2025, at Singapore General Hospital around 2:30 pm. They mentioned that while they were engaged in a business meeting with senior Singaporean industrialists and policymakers at the Shangri-La Hotel to facilitate investments in Northeast India, they received a call from Zubeen’s manager, who informed them about the accident. "With profound grief, we share the heartbreaking news that our beloved icon, Zubeen Garg, passed away today at Singapore General Hospital around 2:30 PM. Zubeen had arrived in Singapore just the day before yesterday. He was scheduled to be with us at the festival tomorrow, meeting and interacting with people. During the meeting, we received a call from Zubeen’s manager informing us that he had met with an accident and had been rushed to Singapore General Hospital."
