'28 Years Later' On Netflix, When To Watch The Zombie Thriller Sequel Of Alfie Williams, Jodie Comer

The 2002 film, 28 Days Later, which was released 23 years ago, returned with its much-awaited sequel, 28 Years Later. Its OTT release has thrilled the fans of the franchise, who can't keep calm anymore. The newest instalment in the series marks the return of Danny Boyle as director and Alex Garland as writer. The movie continues the story 28 years after the apocalyptic virus outbreak, which was portrayed in 28 Days Later. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming release, including its release date, cast, plot and more.

28 Years Later plot and character details

28 Years Later stars Alfie Williams, Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O'Connell, and Chi Lewis-Parry in pivotal roles. The story is set against the backdrop of the 'rage' virus outbreak, amid which a small community of survivors lives a secluded life on Holy Island, off the coast of Northumberland. The island is accessible from the mainland only by a causeway that is submerged during high tide, providing natural protection. The story shows the struggle for survival in such an apocalyptic situation through the eyes of a family.

The family includes father 'Jamie' (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), mother 'Isla' (Jodie Comer), and their 12-year-old son, 'Spike' (Alfie Williams). 'Spike', the protagonist of the story, has grown up in isolation on the island. He is thus inexperienced with the broader world but is forced to mature quickly on his dangerous journey to help his mother, 'Isla'. She suffers from a terminal illness, and her journey with 'Spike' provides a focal point for the film's emotional core. 'Spike's' father tries to protect his family but harbours secrets that ultimately lead to 'Spike's' departure.

Is Cillian Murphy a part of 28 Years Later?

Contrary to popular fan theory, Cillian Murphy is not part of 28 Years Later. The Oppenheimer actor recently debunked the rumours that he played an emaciated zombie in the movie. Actor Angus Neill, an art dealer and model, has actually played the role. Murphy humorously acknowledged the confusion, saying it was 'very flattering' that people thought he looked like a 'zombie cadaver'.

Although he does not appear in the 2025 film, Cillian Murphy is confirmed to return as his 28 Days Later character, 'Jim', in the 2026 sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. He will have a brief cameo at the end of the film, which is intended to set up a much larger role for him in the third and final instalment of the planned trilogy.
