However, the seemingly normal day turns dark when, suddenly, 'Olivia' learns that a nuclear missile has been launched toward Chicago. With no other option left, she must act fast to stop it and save Chicago from the mishap.

Meanwhile, at a missile-defense base in Alaska, Major 'Daniel Gonzalez' (played by Anthony Ramos) and his team try their level best to shoot down the missile, but fail, an attempt with a 50 percent chance of success. The failure made the Secretary of Defense, 'Reid Baker' (played by Jared Harris), lose his cool and call it 'a coin toss.' As the crisis deepens, the President of the US (played by Idris Elba) gets two different opinions from the two powerful advisors, General 'Anthony Brady' (played by Tracy Letts) and 'Jake Baerington' (played by Gabriel Basso).

'Anthony', a senior military officer who oversees the United States Strategic Command, urges the President to retaliate, while 'Jake', the second-highest-ranking member of the National Security Council, urges waiting for proof before taking any action.

Although there has been no official confirmation of a sequel, the film's writer, Noah, explained why it ended on such a note. Speaking to RadioTimes.com, Noah said:

"We chose the ending we did because Kathryn and I both believed that any other ending would let the audience off the hook. We don't want to give the audience a neat, clean resolution. Any ending where the world is saved or the world is destroyed allows people to kind of walk out of the experience and say, 'Okay, well, that's that.... It ended that way, and it's over, and I can go back to my everyday life.'"
