'A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms' Took Place 100 Years Before 'Game Of Thrones', What Was The Budget?

Fantasy drama, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, premiered on January 18, 2026, and is streaming on HBO and HBO Max. The series, which is a spin-off of Game Of Thrones, is based on George R.R Martin's novellas, Tales of Dunk and Egg. In 2016, Martin pitched the idea of two prequels of Game of Thrones, one being around Dunk and Egg, and the other based on the Targaryen civil war, known as Dance of the Dragons, as described in Fire & Blood.

Well, initially, HBO said 'yes' to the second prequel, which was later adapted into House of the Dragon, airing in 2022. Before that, in 2021, the interest around the story of Dunk and Egg picked up, and by 2023, HBO gave it the go-ahead nod. Initially, Steve Cornard was the showrunner, but later, he was no longer associated with the project, and Ira Parker took over, with Martin being the writer and executive producer. The show finally premiered on January 18, 2026, with season 1, consisting of 6 episodes.

What is the budget of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?

It's confirmed that there will be three seasons max, but makers somewhat confirmed this as well that there could be more episodes. Amid, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is in the talks, let's have a look at the budget of this series, which is set between the timeline of 72 years after the civil war shown in House of the Dragon, and 100 years before the actual series, Game of Thrones. The budget of Game of Thrones had been USD 15 million per episode, making the entire budget of 8 seasons stand at USD 775 million. House of the Dragon had a budget of USD 20 million, as reported, excluding USD 100 million marketing charges.

Comparing these two, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has a budget of USD 10 million. Francesca Orsi, HBO’s president of drama series, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter, and said that the budget would be roughly around USD 10 million, which is less than the other two series.

She also added that while the budget is lesser, it doesn't in any way mean that the quality will be compromised, and rather it's focused more on storytelling, something that Martin's novellas are made of. Stating that, this series is set in a timeline when the dragons had vanished, and no big battle took place, contributing to the comparatively lower budget of the series, Fanvesca said:

"We’re doing a ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoff titled ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ for under $10 million in episode, relative to what ‘Game of Thrones’ or ‘House of the Dragon’ cost episodically. And the battle sequences that the directors achieved match those across ‘Game of Thrones’ and are a fraction of the price, so it’s a lesson for us that we need to be challenging these budgets."
