'A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms' What Is Hedge Knight? Is It A Prequel Of HBO's 'Game Of Thrones'?

HBO's series, A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms, is a true spin-off of Game of Thrones. The most famous Game Of Thrones is known for keeping fans on their toes and leaving them nervous with its graphic violence, torture, and more. However, the latest series, A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms, is a lighter version of it. The series is based on George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas.

What is Hedge Knight in A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms?

For those who don't know, Westeroski knights are the real knights from the medieval era. They are well-armed warriors who serve directly to the lord or monarch. They are bound to protect the realm and defend the innocent. In fact, kings, princes and lords can also serve as knights. They are skilled at horseback combat and the brutal art of jousting. They bear a coat of arms on their banners to show off the lineage they come from. It also revealed that the great houses of Westeros have knights.

The first episode of A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms shows that 'Any knight can make a knight. This line was first quoted in the Game of Thrones series when knighting Brienne of Tarth. It means anyone who has the capacity can be a knight by bending the knee, having a sword touched on their shoulder and being dubbed as a 'Ser'. However, this honour should be given by another knight or a monarch, and a witness. But it was not easy for 'Dunk' as his master, 'Ser Arlan' of Pennytree, knighted him with his longsword before he died, but the only witnesses to the ceremony were a thorn tree and a robin. So, he needs a knight or another lord to vouch for him before he can enter the tourney.

In the episode, 'Plummer' tells 'Dun' that Knights also need money for armour, horses, training and men to help them. It is also revealed that if A knight of the Seven Kingdoms loses in the tourney to another knight, they lose all their gear and have to pay a ransom to the winning knight to get it back. Coming to hedge knights, they are the same as knights except they do not have to serve a lord, master or great house. They are more like masterless samurai. The Hedge Knight describes 'Dunk' as:

"The only life he knew was the life of a hedge knight, riding from keep to keep, taking service with this lord and that lord, fighting in their battles and eating in their halls until the war was done, then moving on. There were tourneys from time to time as well, though less often, and he knew that some hedge knights turned robber during lean winters, though the old man never had."

'Ser Dunk' and his master 'Ser Arlan' of Pennytree, hedge knights. 'Dunki shows a tiny scrap of his master's history as he served various lords in the battle, but not permanently. 'Dunk' constantly follows the sacred oath of all knights, serving the realm and protecting the weak and innocent. As per the show, hedge knights have a bad reputation and are seen by most people of Westeros as less important and less formidable knights.
