Aamir Khan is known as a meticulous actor, as well as a filmmaker. He has produced, written the screenplay and also directed numerous films that have been box office successes for the most part. However, one of the most ambitious projects of Aamir that he has often talked about is a film on the Hindu epic, Mahabharat. Recently, as the teaser of Ramayana, another mythological-based film, has been garnering a lot of love from the audience, Aamir has announced that he will start working on Mahabharat from August 2025. He has made major revelations about the cast as well.
Aamir Khan revealed in an interview with Screen that he is ready to work on Mahabharat and will commence in August 2025. Since it is the longest poem ever written and incorporates generations of stories, Aamir's Mahabharat is going to be a franchise and not a singular film. He further stated it would be a series with back-to-back films. The actor also called the epic 'dangerous' since it carries sentimental value for the public. However, Aamir also expressed that the story is in his 'blood' and he needs to tell it and hence would start working on it. In the interview, the actor was quoted as saying:
“Well, I’m starting work on it in the month of August. It will be a series of films. It’ll be back to back. Because you can’t tell the Mahabharat in just one film. And you know, the Mahabharat is very dangerous. It’s again a story which is in my blood. No one can do anything about it. I need to tell it. So I’m starting work on it."
Aamir Khan revealed that he believes the characters of Mahabharat are stars in their own right. So, he doesn't want to take any known faces from the industry to play those characters. Instead, he is weighing his options and thinking about casting unknown faces for the entire cast. Talking about the star cast, Aamir said:
“I don’t plan to take any known faces in the film. For me, the characters are the stars. I want unknown faces. There’ll be entirely new cast for it, is what I’m thinking."
Aamir has often spoken about his dream project, Mahabharat. However, the information has never been concrete. He has also been asked many times about which character he would want to play in the retelling of the epic. At the India@2047 Summit by ABP Live, Aamir expressed that he was greatly inspired by the character of Lord Krishna in the Mahabharata. However, he did not confirm whether he would portray the most important character of the epic in the film, Mahabharat, which he is set to start working on. Instead, Aamir stated that since it is a huge project, he did not want to reveal any major information. The actor said at the summit:
"Actually… mujhe Krishna ka kirdaar bohot hi prabhavit karta hai...I’m very inspired by him. So that’s a character I really love. Kyunki yeh bohot bada project hai, toh main kuch badi cheezein bolna nahi cha raha hoon."
