Aamir Khan has been a doting actor who is fully committed to his craft, and for decades, he has been a perfectionist at nailing his roles. Amid that, the buzz about his retirement left his fans stunned. While the speculations quickly led netizens to think that the actor might be heading to his final films, Aamir has come forward to clarify the speculations.
Aamir Khan sat for a candid interview with the Fan Club segment on Zoom. During the conversation, he squashed any and all speculations surrounding his retirement post-Mahabharat. He added that the film is a project he has been passionate about for a long time now. Hence, when he was asked to name a film after which he would happily hang his boots, he said Mahabharat. However, there was a big 'IF' in the question, which seemed to have been misinterpreted.
"Mahabharat is not going to be my last film. Abhi chakkar yeh hain aap kuch bhi bolo, uska wrong meaning humesha nikal aata hai. Mujhse pucha gaya tha aap koi aisi film kare jiske baad aapko koi kaam karne ka mann hi na ho toh voh kaunsi film hogi. ‘Agar’ aap aisi film kare toh. Agar bohot important hai."
In the same conversation, Aamir Khan shared that material-wise, he feels like there is a lot that Mahabharat can provide to satisfy him as an actor. He added that he answered the film as a possibility of what would make him happy to hang his cap. However, he didn't mean that it would be his last. Aamir concluded by stating"
"Material wise mujhe ek hi cheez nazar aati hai jismein voh power hai ki joh karne ke baad shayad mere mann mein yeh khyal uthe ki bas ho gaya. Maine uska jawab iss context mein diya tha. Logon ko laga Mahabharata meri last film hai. Answer ko theek se sunna chahiye."
It was a while back when Aamir Khan spoke about his dream project, Mahabharat, during a conversation with Raj Shamani for his podcast. The conversation sparked buzz around retirement after he said that it was his dream to make a film on the grand epic. In the interview Aamir can be heard stating how he will be left with a feeling of satisfaction once the film is completed. He was quoted as saying:
"It's my dream to make Mahabharat, and I will start working on it after the release of Sitaare Zameen Par on June 20. I feel like that’s one project which, once I’ve done it, might leave me with the feeling that there's nothing more I can do after that. Because the material is like that — it's layered, emotional, vast in scale, and full of grandeur. Everything that exists in the world can be found in Mahabharat."
At the moment, Aamir Khan is gearing up for the release of his upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par which will be released on June 20, 2025. The actor will be seen in the role of a basketball coach who is forced to train a team of neurodivergent children for a tournament as a form of punishment. The film is directed by R.S. Prasanna and is the remake of the Spanish movie, Campeones. The film will mark the debut of ten actors including Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar. The film is also being called the spirit sequal of Aamir's 2007 hit, Taare Zameen Par.
