Recently, filmmakers such as Sanjay Gupta and more have opened up about how stars demand costly maintenance from production teams, including multiple vanity vans for the gym and kitchen, and even make the producers pay for their spotboys, drivers, and more. Aamir Khan, who is himself a producer and is the son of late movie producer, Tahir Hussain, has opened up about his own observations on the exorbitant demands of the 'stars of today' and called them out for not paying their own personal staff.
Bollywood superstar and the owner of Aamir Khan Productions, Aamir, has opened up about the troubles faced by producers to keep up with the costly personal demands of the stars. In a conversation with Komal Nahta, the PK actor recalled that when he joined the industry nearly four decades ago, he observed how the producers would pay the drivers and the personal staff of the actors present on the set. Aamir believes that the filmmakers should only pay for expenses that contribute towards the film, such as hair, makeup, and costumes. The actor shared:
“I believe producers should only spend on what is genuinely required for the film. This includes makeup, hair, costume. But paying for my personal driver or help, how are they contributing to the film? They are working for me. It is my responsibility to pay them, especially when I am earning well. From day one, I was very clear that no producer of mine will pay for my driver or help. It’s been 37 years now.”
Aamir Khan expressed his disappointment that the current generation of stars also follow this trend of making production houses pay for their personal staff. Actors also demand a live kitchen on set, multiple vanity vans for kitchen and gyms, which is what Aamir Khan has heard. As a producer and actor, he finds it very 'sad and harmful' for the industry that celebrities who are earning in crores charge the production team for their personal lifestyle expenses. Aamir was quoted as saying:
“These stars are earning in crores and yet not capable of paying for their needs? I find this extremely strange. It is very sad and harmful for the industry. I am saying it strongly that it’s a shame that even today there are actors who are being very unfair to their producers and their films. When you can afford a lifestyle for yourself, why are you putting that on a producer? Why should the producer give you six vans when all you need is one van for makeup?”
Aamir Khan stated that certain expenses should be covered by the filmmakers if they are essential to the film. He gave the example of his sports-drama film, Dangal and said that as the producer, he paid for the wrestling training of the actresses. However, he feels that stars today are taking advantage of their status and making 'strange' demands.
What are your thoughts on Aamir Khan calling out stars for levying their personal expenses on producers?
