In an interview with Times Now, Lalit shared that they got the idea of making the song during their car ride to the film's set. Aamir Khan was driving the car, and Jatin-Lalit and Vikram Bhatt were sitting in the passenger seat. He added that while they were planning for a song, Aamir Khan surprised them while humming the song, Sagar Jaisi Aankhon Wali on their way to the set. Lalit found Aamir's voice soothing and he suggested that Aamir should sing a song for their film, Ghulam. While Aamir liked the idea, he found it surprising and was reluctant to commit right away.
