R Madhavan is one of the most versatile actors in the Bollywood film industry. Back in 2001, he made his debut in Bollywood with the film, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (RHTDM). However, over the years, the actor has excelled in both protagonist and negative roles. Recently, the actor has made headlines for his latest film, Aap Jaisa Koi. For the unversed, the film, Aap Jaisa Koi, starring R Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh, was released on July 11, 2025. In a recent interview, the Aap Jaisa Koi actor shared what made him take up the project and also dropped a major hint at giving up romantic roles.
R Madhavan and his co-star of Aap Jaisa Koi, Fatima, recently sat for an interview with Just Too Filmy, and talked about anything and everything about their latest release, Aap Jaisa Koi. During the conversation, the 55-year-old actor was asked what made him decide to take up the role of 'Shrirenu Tripathi', a middle-aged professor in Aap Jaisa Koi. In response, the actor said after reading the script, he found the story that synced well with his present age, and was confident to portray the role on-screen. He also shared that the romantic drama was his last chance to romance on-screen. He hinted at quitting roles like 'Maddy' in RHTDM. In his words:
"When I started this story, I thought I will be able to pull off a romantic story at the day and the age I was. Because I was looking for an age-appropriate romance. Maybe my last chance to do romance before I have to give it up completely. That’s why."
In May 2025, R Madhavan sat for an interview with Hollywood Reporter and talked about how nowadays, the romantic films lack the old charm that earlier Bollywood films had. Madhavan’s debut, RHTDM, where he portrayed a lover boy image, 'Maddy', was not a box-office hit, but over the years, the film has become a cult classic. RHTDM is the Hindi version of Minnale, a Tamil film directed by Gautham Menon, which became a commercial success. Talking about the change in the recent romantic films, Madhavan said:
"I don't recall any rom-com that has worked on OTT platforms either. I know the Korean dramas work, but I don't recall seeing any hardcore, Indian, romantic film."
R Madhavan will be next seen in the film, Dhurandhar. He will be sharing the screen with a star cast including Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, and Akshaye Khanna. The film is set for release on December 5, 2025 and as per many reports, Madhavan will portray, Ajit Doval, India’s security advisor on-screen. He also has a Tamil film, GD Naidu, in the pipeline. It is a biopic of the Indian scientist, GD Naidu, and Madhavan will be essaying his role on-screen. The film also stars Priyamani, Yogi Babu, and Jayaram.
