R. Madhanvan has been ruling this year with his back-to-back stunning performances. After winning hearts with the movies, Hisaab Barabar, Test and Kesari Chapter 2, Madhavan is back to send his fans into a meltdown with the movie, Aap Jaisa Koi. The movie features him and Fatima Sana Shaikh in the lead roles. The movie is produced by Karan Johar's Dharmatic Entertainment for Netflix, and it's directed by Vivek Soni.
Although the genre of the movie is romantic drama, it deals with an unconventional way of finding love and holding onto it only after emotional confrontation. Dating apps have been used as a symbol, while R. Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh's personalities have been shown in contrasting ways, but not in an 'opposite attracts' manner. While R. Madhavan plays the role of 'Shrirenu Tripathi', whose emotions are subtle, and who feels that desiring something is shameful.
Playing the role of a 42-year-old in the film 'Shrirenu', a Sanskrit teacher, fell for the French instructor, 'Mandhu Bose', played by Fatima. Fatima is more from the present generation, who challenges someone like 'Shrirenu' to be freer, who felt reserved throughout his life. Thus, rather than making the film in a contrasting tone, the movie shows two characters from two generations, two emotional realities and two different definitions of freedom.
Given a relationship between a 40-year-old and a mid-20-year-old, the couple eventually comes to face challenges including social challenges, their difference of age being in question, 'Shrirenu's own insecurities and more. The movie finally moves to showcasing how, through emotional evolution, they confront their fears, see self-worth and challenge patriarchy around them.
The movie is a romantic drama, and love remains at its core. However, it's a love between two emotionally complex people who didn't fall in love with each other at first sight, but eventually discover love on their own terms with mutual love and respect. The movie has a deep symbol of dating apps as well, where 'Madhu' is more open in this tech-driven world, 'Shrirenu' remains reserved, and he is pushed to try dating apps to find someone. This was also served in a contrasting manner to build on the original plot of the movie, along with a relatively touching moment.

While the audience loves the movie and the plot, and tagged this to be a 'must watch', some of the viewers called it a dull version of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani. While some felt that the movie lacked emotional depth, others think that the movie portrayed love beautifully in an age-appropriate manner, while tackling patriarchy subtly. Critics also shwoered love upon the movie, and R. Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh's performances have also been praised.
One user commented, " A fanciful air envelopes #AapJaisaKoi's modest drama, of a story lost in its own bubble that's only burst by villains in the form of judgemental jerks and heroes in need of rescuing." A second user commented, "Aap jaisa koi is a MUST watch. I really needed this film to be good. And it delivers. Everything is great but Ayesha Raza wins this round." A third user wrote, "Vivek Soni continues creating pretty pictures, while Dharma continues to prettify and simplify complex problems."
