'Aashiqui' Fame, Anu Aggarwal Says She Saw Her Debut Film Post Her Memory Loss, 'I Couldn't Connect'

Anu Aggarwal emerged as an overnight star with her debut film, Aashiqui in 1990. While she was still reeling from the effects of massive success, within a short while, she became a victim of a brutal car accident, which not only scarred her physical appearance, but also wiped off her memory. The fatal incident also left a dent in her career, as she quietly moved away from the showbiz. And now, the diva reveals some anecdotes about her accident.

Anu Aggarwal reveals the first time she saw her debut film, Aashiqui after her accident

In an interaction with The Indian Express, Anu Aggarwal opened up about the first time when she watched her debut film, Aashiqui, after her accident. With her memory wiped off completely, the diva couldn’t recognise a thing that was shown on the screen, in fact, not even herself. Revealing anecdotes from that experience, she said:

“I watched the film when I had my memory loss after the accident. My mother played it for me, but I couldn’t relate with it at all. I couldn’t relate with the girl on screen! My mother kept saying, ‘That’s you!’ I just like a child kept looking at it, but I couldn’t connect. At that time Aashiqui 2 was out, so she then played that for me. But nothing still made sense to me. She told me, ‘See this was your film Aashiqui and now they have made Aashiqui 2.’ I asked her, ‘what is 2?’ Because I didn’t know numbers, what was one, two, three. That was my state.”

Anu Aggarwal retrospects her performance as a debut star in Aashiqui

Speaking more about her phase of memory loss, Anu Aggarwal then talked about how she couldn’t recognise herself in the film, but was nevertheless moved by the character that was played by her. She remarked how her performance evoked strong feelings in her, and added that it was the primary reason why people still liked the film. In her words:

“I couldn’t think the girl on screen was me, but I felt the emotions. The film had such strong emotions. That’s why people still talk about it. At the end of the day, the audience responds to what they see and during the film, they were throwing money on screen, laughing and crying. That happened because the film does move you.”
