Abhijeet Bhattacharya is one of the much-loved singers of Bollywood, who never skips a chance to win the hearts of his fans with his melodious tone and soulful songs. Time and again, Abhijeet has landed himself in controversy. And yet the same happened again, as he recently said that Mahatma Gandhi is the father of Pakistan and not of India, and he also gave an explanation about why he had said so.
Talking to Free Press Journal, Abhijeet Bhattacharya stated that RD Burman was bigger than Mahatma Gandhi, as although Bapu was the father of the nation, RD Burman was the father of the nation in the world of music. He further added that Mahatma Gandhi was the father of Pakistan and not of India. He backed his remark by saying that India already existed, but Pakistan later was mapped out, and it was Gandhiji who made that happen, thus, he is mistakenly called the father of India. Abhijeet can be quoted as saying:
"Music composer RD Burman was bigger than Mahatma Gandhi. Like Mahatma Gandhi was the father of the nation, RD Burman was the father of the nation in the world of music. Mahatma Gandhi was the father of the nation for Pakistan and not India. India already existed, Pakistan was carved out of India later. Gandhi has been mistakenly called the father of the nation for India. He was the one responsible for the existence of Pakistan."
Abhijeet Bhattacharya's remark about Gandhiji ended up causing controversy around him, and he was drawn to the legal tassel for the same. Asim Sarode, a Pune-based lawyer sent a legal notice to Abhijeet Bhattacharya for his remark on Gandhiji. In his legal notice, Asim quoted Gandhiji saying that to accept the partition of India would be over his dead body, when the political situation was on the verge of dividing the country during its independence movement. He also added that Bapu had tirelessly worked for the unity of Hindus and Muslims to promote the idea of brotherhood. An excerpt from the legal notice reads:
"When the political situation during the Independence movement was on the verge of dividing India into two nations, Mahatma Gandhi stated, ‘To accept partition, it will be over my dead body. So long as I am alive, I will never agree to the partition of India'".
There had been several times when Abhijeet Bhattacharya landed himself in several controversies. It was in an old interview when Abhijeet took a jab at Salman Khan and said that he had prioritised Pakistani artists over Indian singers, which was deliberate. He also gave an example of how Salman replaced Rahat Fateh Ali Khan with Arijit Singh. For the unversed, as soon as this comment made rounds on social media, Salman Khan's fans lashed out at the singer for his remarks about their favourite actor.
Apart from that, Abhijeet's 17-year-long rift with Shah Rukh Khan isn't unknown to anyone. He had, time and again, taken digs at King Khan and even called him a 'commercialised' person. He also ended up taking digs at Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. Talking about the patriotism of Bollywood actors, the singer, without taking anyone's name, said in an interview that an actor went to Ram Mandir but his wife criticises the same party who built it.
