Jaya Bachchan, the veteran Bollywood actor and the Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha from the Samajwadi Party, had made her debut in the acting world in 1963 with a Bengali film, Mahanagar. 8 years later, Guddi released and it marked to be the debut of Jaya Bhaduri in the Hindi film industry. Winner with nine Filmfare awards and the Padma Shri by the Government of India, the professional journey of Jaya ji has been a commendable one. Jaya Bhaduri, the lady with a no-nonsensical attitude and always speaking her heart out, became Mrs Bachchan post her wedding with her Chupke Chupke co-star, Amitabh Bachchan in 1973. June 3, 1973, Amitabh ji and Jaya ji had embarked on their journey of ‘happily ever after’ together and since then, there has been no looking back for them. Proud parents of Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda, doting grandparents of Navya Naveli Nanda, Agastya Nanda and Aaradhya Bachchan and loving parents-in-law of Nikhil Nanda and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the power couple of B-town, Amitabh ji and Jaya ji have completed almost five decades of marital bliss.
On April 9, 2020, Jaya Bachchan turned 72 and what she means to her two star children, Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda is clearly expressed in their crisp birthday wishes for her. Informing that Jaya ji is stuck in Delhi due to the COVID-19 lockdown while the entire family is in Mumbai, Abhishek wrote a ‘miss you’ birthday note for his mother. Sharing a smiling picture of Jaya ji, Abhishek wrote, “As every child will tell you, their favourite word is... MA! Happy Birthday, Ma. Although you are away in Delhi due to the lockdown and we all are here in Mumbai, know that we are thinking of you and carry you in our hearts. I love you!”
Shweta Bachchan Nanda took a trip down the memory lane and posted a throwback picture from her and Abhishek Bachchan’s childhood as they posed with their mom, Jaya Bachchan. Borrowing a few lines from E. E. Cummings poem, I Carry Your Heart With Me, Shweta wrote, “I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart) I am never without it (anywhere I go you go ...) -happy birthday Mama; I love U (with a little help from e e Cummings).” Shweta’s daughter, Navya Naveli Nanda teased her mom and commented on the post, “You are daydreaming here also” followed by a heart emoji. For Jaya Bachchan’s 71st birthday, her star kids, Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda had poured out heartfelt wishes for their mom. Sharing a beautiful picture reflecting their mother-daughter relationship, Shweta had quoted the lines of a Walt Whitman poem, “O Captain My Captain”, whereas, son, Abhishek had posted a throwback picture of his mother and had captioned it as “Maa! (in hindi), The word says it all. Happy Birthday Ma. Love you.”

In 2018, when Jaya Bachchan had turned 70, Amitabh Bachchan had posted a beautiful picture of her, as she got a tight hug by Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda. Big B had penned an emotional note, which could be read as “At the stroke of the midnight hour the greetings and wishes and calls and the feeding of sweetmeats; the gifting of love and togetherness and the welcoming of the lady on her 70th !! She be wife and Mother and she be with her ‘progress report. Feelings and love delivered writings of occasion handwritten on card the gratitude of the special day and spending the time with all about, reminiscing. Quiet still and intimate the best way to bring in a remembrance and the passage of time over the year gone by.”
On Koffee With Karan season 6, Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan Nanda had commented on their mom, Jaya Bachchan’s hysterical videos of lashing out at the media, every now and then. Abhishek finds the videos amusing and always prepares for a showdown when the whole family goes out together. Though Jaya ji has grown much more comfortable with the paparazzi, it’s the fans who ask for selfies are the problem. Defending her mom, Shweta had said, “She gets very claustrophobic when there are too many people around her. She also doesn’t like it when people take her pictures without asking her.
