Air India Plane Crash Victims In The UK Receive Wrong Bodies, DNA Analysis Indicated Mismatch

The Air India AI171 plane crash was one of the worst mishaps seen in the Indian aviation industry. Now, families of two victims have allegedly filed a mistaken identity case after DNA reports showcased a mismatch in the remains. The allegations have come post growing concerns related to how the effect of the June 12, 2025, crash has been handled by the airlines as well as the authorities. Two victims, according to an India Today report, received the wrong bodies as their lawyers mentioned.

Crash victims' bodies wrongly identified and sent to the UK

For the unversed, the Air India flight AI171, Boeing Dreamliner 787-8, was headed to London from Ahmedabad International Airport. The take off took place at 1.30 p.m. and moments later, the flight crashed at BJ Medical College, Meghaninagar, Ahmedabad, setting a destructive blaze. From the 242 passengers, just one survived, and now, reportedly, two families of the victims in the UK received the wrong bodies. Reportedly, India had sent the bodies in coffins post DNA sampling in a government hospital in Ahmedabad and that the airliner had no role in the mixing up of bodies. A UK lawyer told India Today:

"Remains of the crash victims were wrongly identified and flown to the UK. One family had to abandon their funeral plans after being told by the coroner that the coffin contained the body of an unknown person and not that of their family member. The family had to get the remains of the two passengers separated before carrying out the funeral of their family member."

The mix-up came into the light when an official in London verified the remains of the deceased victims via their DNA match, and the families came to know that the remains were not of their loved ones. The lawyer did add that there was one family who was left with no one to bury after they realised that they had received the wrong remains.

India says that dignity has been maintained while handing over bodies of the deceased

There were reports carried by the British Media of receiving the wrong bodies of their loved ones who passed away on June 12, 2025. Now, India's Ministry of External Affairs shared that the Indian officials have continued to work with their counterparts and address the concerns. Randhir Jaiswal, who is the spokesperson of the Ministry Of External Affairs, shared of working closely with the UK at the moment when the concerns were brought to their attention. He said in a press statement that the mortal remains of the deceased were handled with dignity and professionalism. In his words:

"In the wake of the tragic crash, the concerned authorities had carried out identification of victims as per established protocols and technical requirements. We are continuing to work with the UK authorities on addressing any concerns related to this issue."

Families in the UK who are devastated have claimed that wrong bodies have been flown into their country. In some of the cases, the families have also received remains of more than one person who had to be separated. Reports stated that the remains of two deceased were sent in the coffins. The mortal remains of 12 passengers have been sent to the UK, according to an India Today report. The DNA testings were done at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital after the bodies were charred and beyond recognition.
