Aishwarya Rai Wore Manish Malhotra Saree For Cannes, Fans Compare Her 'Sindoor-Bhari Maang' To Rekha

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been proving since 2002 that she is the queen of Cannes. She had made countless Indians proud by making an appearance in a golden saree for the premiere of Devdas back in the time. After years of attending the Cannes Film Festival and flaunting her every milestone like a queen, Aishwarya was back on the red carpet in a saree, and this time, she owned it with her sindoor-clad look.

On May 21, 2025, after making her fans wait for an eternity, Aishwarya arrived at the Cannes Film Festival and let her do the talking. After facing a lot of backlash for her outfit choices, Aishwarya, this year, wore a beautiful Manish Malhotra saree. The outfit featured handwoven kadwa ivory Banarasi with golden work on the border. She styled it with a matching sheer dupatta that made her look like a queen. 

Another highlight of her look was her heirloom jewellery. Aishwarya ditched the trending emerald and diamond jewellery. Instead, she opted for red rubies. A huge choker neckpiece featuring red beads, a layered ruby neckpiece, matching cocktail flower ring on both hands completed her look. 

Aishwarya's sindoor-adorned look reminds netizens of Rekha 

Aishwarya wore a deep red-toned sindoor on her forehead for the first time at an international level. It has a lot of meaning to it. One, it could be a way of her silencing the trolls, who commented on her troubled marriage. Another could be her way of marking her solidarity with the country as a mark of Operation Sindoor. While it could be anything, fans love her look and even compare it with Rekha.

One user wrote, "She looks great, although the hairstyle needs to change. She is reminding me a lot of Rekha here with the sindoor and all." Another commented, "That full maang of sindoor is a homage to Rekha!" A third user penned, "Inspired by Operation Sindoor or Sindoor of Rekha Ma?"

Some heaped praises on Aishwarya's saree-clad look. One user wrote, "I don’t care what anyone says, but she is a QUEEN." A second one commented, "Omg she looks so fine!! Queen, also looks like she has lost a lot of weight." Another penned, "The outfit is beautiful. The neckpiece is refreshing from the overdose of emeralds we have seen, but the red lipstick and heavy eyeliner is not it. I wish she had put on kajal instead of the heavy eyeliner on top."

For the unversed, the 78th edition of the Cannes Film Festival started on May 13, 2025, and will end on May 24, 2025. One of the highlights of this year's Cannes was that the American acting legend Rober De Niro was awarded the honorary Palme d'Or for lifetime achievement during the opening ceremony. Several Indian actors like Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter, Karan Johar, Nitanshi Goel, and Pratibha Ratna made their appearances felt on the Cannes Red carpet. But all eyes were looking and waiting for Aishwarya.
