Bollywood has recently been filled with back-to-back controversies, and the one between Deepika Padukone and Sandeep Reddy Vanga has gained the most attention. The alleged rift over the actress's demands for work in Sandeep's upcoming film has ignited a new debate. Among other conditions, Deepika's demand for an 8-hour shift reportedly shocked the filmmaker, and some media reports labelled the actress as being 'unprofessional'. Although, neither Deepika nor Sandeep directly called out each other, the issue was followed by a string of debates and media speculation. Amid all this, recently, Ajay Devgn was asked about his view on the 8-hour shift demand, and his reply surprised the internet.
Ajay Devgn recently attended the trailer launch event of his upcoming film, Maa. He was joined by his wife, Kajol, who plays the lead role in the film. Amid other questions posed towards him, the actor was asked about his views on the ongoing debate over an 8-hour work shift demand in the industry for new moms, which started after Deepika left Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Spirit. In turn, the actor indirectly mentioned that the demand isn't taken well in the industry. He said:
"It's not that it's not going down well with people. Most of the honest filmmakers will not have problems with it."
The Singham Again actor explained that the demand for 8-hour work shift isn't limited to new moms. Rather, many other actors have started to adopt eight to nine-hour work shifts in the industry. Ajay concluded by stating that the choice about work shift differs from person to person and he believes that most people in the industry understand it. Netizens felt that Ajay Devgn's response was a nod to Deepika, which was praised by many.
Controversy began when Deepika Padukone was allegedly finalised to play the lead role opposite Prabhas in Spirit. For those unaware, the duo also worked together in Kalki 2898 AD. However, the actress who was set to make her comeback after maternity break with the Sandeep Reddy Vanga starrer had allegedly put forward certain demands like 8-hour work shift, pre-decided days of shoot and share in profit, which shocked the filmmaker. However, when demands were rejected, she exited the film, and Triptii Dimri was cast in her place. Next, the filmmaker mentioned that his film's story was allegedly leaked due to PR gimmicks, in a post on X and wrote:
"When I narrate a story to an actor, I place 100% faith. There is an unsaid NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) between us. But by doing this, you've 'DISCLOSED' the person that you are.... Putting down a Younger actor and ousting my story? Is this what your feminism stands for?"
Meanwhile, Maa is an upcoming horror film, starring Kajol in the lead role with Indraneil Sengupta, Jitin Gulati, and Kherin Sharma. It's directed by Vishal Furia. Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Subbarayan have produced the film. It stars Kajol in a never-seen-before avatar. Maa is set to release on June 27, 2025.
