Ajith is one of the leading actors of Tamil cinema, and his wife, Shalini, was once a popular actress in the South Indian film industry. Apart from some path-breaking films, Ajith is also a professional racer and has been competing in various races. He is one of the highest-paid actors and charges an estimated sum of Rs. 105 crores per film.

During the shooting of the film, Amarkalam, Ajith was cast opposite Shalini. During a scene, the hero, Ajith, pretends to injure the heroine, Shalini’s hand, with a knife to scare her. However, the actor accidentally cut her hand with a knife and ended up hurting her. She was rushed to the hospital, and a worried Ajith took care of her throughout her stay in the hospital. Soon they fell in love and started dating.
When Ajith and Shalini fell in love, they kept their relationship a secret from everyone. When Shalini was shooting for the Malayalam film, Niram, her co-star and actor, Kunchako, was aware of her relationship status with Ajith. During that time, mobile phones were not very popular, but Kunchacko used to carry his Ericson mobile to the shooting set.

Shalini’s parents too accompanied her to the shooting location, and to speak to her, Ajith used to call on Kunchacko’s mobile. To avoid suspicion, whenever Ajith called, Kunchacko would say, "Sona, AK-47 calling." For the unversed, 'Sona' was the name of Shalini’s character in Niram. This way, Ajith and Shalini could speak to each other without getting noticed.
After a few years of courtship, Ajith and Shalini tied the knot on April 24, 2000, in an interfaith marriage, as Ajith belongs to a Hindu Brahmin family, and Shalini is a Protestant Christian. Together, they are proud parents to two kids, Anoushka and Aadvik.
Ajith Kumar was honoured with Padma Bhushan in April 2025 by President Droupadi Murmu. The actor gave the credit for his win to his wife, Shalini, for being his biggest cheerleader. In an interview with India Today, Ajith talked about Shalini’s sacrifices and said:
“I am grateful to my family for their support. Shalini… she made so many sacrifices. I am not trying to sound politically correct here. I mean it in every sense. She was very popular and was loved by the people. And for her to just you know…take a backseat. There were times when my decisions have probably not been the right decisions. But she still stood by me, not discouraging me, and standing by my side during the tough times. She deserves a lot of credit for everything I have achieved in my life.”
