Alka Yagnik Is Not Able To Take New Projects After Suffering From A Rare Disorder And Hearing Loss

One of the most loved Bollywood singers, Alka Yagnik, broke many records in her long career. It was in the 1990s when Alka rose to fame and won audiences’ hearts with her melodious voice. However, her fans got the biggest shocks when the singer was diagnosed with a rare condition in 2024, which led to hearing loss caused by a viral infection.

Alka Yagnik reveals why she is unable to take on new projects

In an interview with NDTV, Alka Yagnik shared an update about her battle with the rare sensory neural hearing loss diagnosis. The report stated that Alka was not too comfortable talking about her diagnosis, but also admitted that she is still suffering a lot. The singer also revealed that many composers approached her with work, but she is not able to take them because of her condition. In her words:

“Composers approach me now and then. But I am not able to do it."

Alka Yagnik penned an emotional note about her hearing loss

In June 2024, Alka Yagnik took to her IG handle and informed her fans about the devastating news of her hearing loss. Alka penned a long note and revealed that it was after she walked out of a flight that she experienced her inability to hear anything.

In her long note, Alka also mentioned that she has still not come to terms with the news and also cautioned her colleagues to be aware of exposure to loud music. An excerpt from her note could be read as:

“A few weeks ago, as I walked out of a flight, I suddenly felt I was not able to hear anything. Having mustered some courage in the weeks following the episode, I want to break my silence now for all my friends and well wishers who have been asking me why I’m missing in action. It has been diagnosed by my docs as a rare sensory neural nerve hearing loss, due to a viral attack…This sudden, major setback has caught me completely unawares.”

What is the rare disorder Alka Yagnik has been suffering from?

Alka Yagnik has been suffering from Sensorineural nerve hearing loss (SNHL). It is a rare disorder that leads to permanent hearing loss due to damage to the inner ear or to the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the brain. The disorder can be caused by many factors, including illness, genetic predisposition, exposure to loud noises, or viral infections. Musicians are often at a higher risk of this disorder due to prolonged exposure to loud music. However, the condition cannot be treated with medicine or surgery. Alka fell prey to the condition, which has impacted her glorious singing career.

Alka Yagnik began her career at the age of 6. In 1980, she made her debut in playback singing for Hindi cinema with the movie, Payal Ki Jhankaar. But her foot-tapping number in the 1988 film, Tezaab’s song, Ek Do Teen, gave her unparalleled recognition. She has recorded around 2000 songs in over 16 languages in her melodious voice. Her last recorded song was Naram Kaalja from Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila in 2024. Since then, she has not had any songs.
