Amanjot Kaur’s grandmother suffered a heart attack

Smashing on the ground, Amanjot was unaware that her grandmother had suffered a heart attack and left her family mourning. The talented all-rounder from Punjab played the most crucial match of her career, the final against South Africa, without knowing that her 75-year-old grandmother, Bhagwanti, had passed away just days earlier. Her family members did not tell her about this news out of concern until after India’s historic win.

Her father, in a conversation with the Indian Express, said that Amanjot’s grandmother suffered a heart attack last month, but they chose not to inform her. He also said the World Win surely comes as a balm in these tense times. Amanjot’s father also said that his mother, Bhagwanti, had been her pillar of strength ever since she started playing. He added:

“My mother Bhagwanti has been Amanjot’s pillar of strength since the day she started playing cricket outside on the street and the park at our Phase 5 residence in Mohali. While I would be at my carpentry shop at Balongi, she would make sure to sit outside the home or at the park to oversee Amanjot playing with the boys as well as other girls."

Amanjot Kaur on winning the World Cup

As soon as Harmanpreet Kaur took the final catch, sealing India’s historic 2025 Women’s World Cup victory, the stadium erupted in joy. The Indian team celebrated with tears and cheers, realising the magnitude of their achievement. Among them, Amanjot Kaur was overwhelmed with emotion moments earlier. She had juggled a crucial catch twice before finally securing it on the third attempt, dismissing South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt and turning the game in India’s favor.

Speaking to the host broadcaster after the win, Amanjot said, “We all knew how important the catch was. First time ever in my life, glad that I got that second chance. I don’t have words to express it — we’ve created history.” She went on to thank her teammates, coaches, and family, adding that her grandmother was unwell and watching from home, unaware that she had, in fact, passed away days earlier.

We offer condolences to Amanjot Kaur and her family.
