Amar Singh Chamkila's legacy has been reaching every cinema lover's heart. The kind of dedication and love he had for his art of singing, is now known across the world. However, Amar Singh Chamkila's life story is a dreaded one. He was one of the most popular singers and people would eagerly wait to hear him sing. However, at the mere age of 27, Chamkila was shot dead on March 9, 1988, along with his second wife and singer, Amarjot in Mehsampur, Punjab. The legendary singer's first wife, Gurmail Kaur first time talked about the moment when they heard the news about his murder.
Chamkila's brutal murder never came in between the legacy he created. The murderers ruined the lives of two families, but Chamkila's spirit lived on in every Punjab. And now, everyone knows about his charisma and hard work, courtesy of Diljit Dosanjh's film, directed by Imtiaz Ali. While everyone is aware of his life story, it is his first wife, Gurmail Kaur's life that stopped the moment he was shot dead. Recently, in an interview with Love Punjab, Gurmail recalled the moment when she found out about Chamkila's death.

Gurmail Kaur revealed that they got to know about his death through the news as they didn't had phones back then. She also revealed that her parents had sent someone to confirm the news. Later, they went to see him. She was quoted as saying:
"We didn’t have phones back then. I heard the news through the news and word of mouth. My parents first sent a person to confirm the news. When that man returned and confirmed the news, then we went to see them."
Gurmail further recalled that the last time she had met Chamkila was just a day or two before he was shot, and she saw his face looked black. And the moment she saw his mortal remains, she recalled that it was the same black face she saw when she met him last time. She said:
"Amarjot and I were in the kitchen and we watched him get drenched in the rain. I felt his face was different, I thought it had turned black. I looked at his face at different intervals, and his face continued to look black. When I saw his mortal remains, it was the same black face that I had seen the last time."
Chamkila's first wife, Gurmail's had two children. The elder daughter, Amandeep Kaur was too young when her father died in the horrific gunshots. After Chamkila's death, life became tough as she had to take care of her mother, too, as Gurmail started falling sick after her husband's death.
On the other hand, Kamaldeep Kaur lives in Canada. The gorgeousness followed her father, Chamkila's footsteps and made a name in the Punjabi industry with her debut song, Lalkara. She is known by her stage name Kamal Chamkila.
