Amitabh Bachchan Broke Up With 'Cunning' GF Before Debut? Hanif Zaveri Says, 'She Would Scold Him'

Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan (then Bhaduri) tied the knot in 1973 and became one of the first power couples of Bollywood. Though their marriage has been marred by unconfirmed affair rumours, they have been together for more than five decades. Recently, veteran journalist and celebrity biographer, Hanif Zaveri, revealed about Amitabh Bachchan's love life before his debut and his past relationship with a 'cunning woman' named Maya. 

Amitabh Bachchan was in a relationship with Maya before he moved to Mumbai 

Amitabh Bachchan used to live and earn in Kolkata (Calcutta) before relocating to Mumbai to try his luck in the Hindi film industry. During this time, he fell in love with an employee of British Airways, as revealed by Hanif Zaveri in a chat with Meri Saheli. Her name was Maya, and Amitabh Bachchan really loved her, and so did she. However, the budding star moved to Mumbai while shooting for his debut film, Saat Hindustani.

In Juhu, Mumbai, Amitabh Bachchan stayed in a bungalow owned by his mother's friend, and Maya would visit him often, stated Hanif. Amitabh Bachchan was scared that his mother would find out about his secret romance and expressed his concerns to film producer and actor, Anwar Ali. The latter helped the newcomer and gave him a place to stay. 

Hanif Zaveri says that Amitabh Bachchan was shy and his ex-girlfriend was cunning 

Hanif Zaveri shared that Maya and Amitabh Bachchan were in a relationship for quite a while and would have gotten married, but the actor wasn't financially stable then. The celebrity biographer also mentioned that Maya would talk curtly to Amitabh Bachchan and scold him too, without paying any heed to who was sitting with him. The actor was getting apprehensive about this, and none of his colleagues and friends liked it either. Hanif Zaveri was quoted as saying:

“In those days, Amitabh was a very shy man and Maya was quite cunning. Sometimes, she wouldn’t even bother who was sitting with him and would speak with him as she wanted, she would scold him too. Anwar Ali, and all of Amitabh’s other friends didn’t really like this. And Amitabh was also getting nervous about this.”

Anwari Ali suggested Amitabh Bachchan to break up with Maya 

Anwari Ali had once reportedly shared with Hanif Zaveri that he was the one who suggested Amitabh Bachchan to break up with Maya while they were shooting his debut film, Saat Hindustani. Anwar stated that his girlfriend would not pair well with the Bachchan family. Amitabh Bachchan also started distancing himself from Maya, which led them to go their separate ways before his debut film was released. Talking about his conversation with Anwar Ali, Hanif shared:

“He told me that when they were shooting in Goa for Saat Hindustani, he told Amitabh to break up with Maya. He felt that she wouldn’t fit into Bachchan’s family and if Amitabh was to go ahead in the movies, problems might increase. And Amitabh also felt that there was something missing. Eventually, he started distancing himself from Maya and they broke up, and went their separate ways.”
