Amitabh Bachchan is considered one of the living legends in Hindi cinema. The actor turned 82 on October 11, 2024, and social media was flooded with tributes and lovely wishes from his fans and critics. Like every year, Big B's well-wishers gathered outside his residence, Jalsa, in Mumbai and wished him a healthy and long life. Howver, do you know that once Amitabh Bachchan collapsed and nearly died, after which he declared that he would quit acting.
Tinnu Anand once sat for an interview with Radio Nasha, where he talked about his ambitious project, Shahenshah. Tinnu shared that when he reached Mysore, he learned that Amitabh had been injured on the sets of Shahenshah. Thus, the legendary actor went to Bangalore for a checkup. As he reached there, Amitabh told him that he had been diagnosed with a nerve condition called myasthenia gravis. In Tinnu's words:

“When I reached Mysore, I was told that he(Amitabh Bachchan) ’s got injured and he’s been taken to Bangalore for a checkup and he has asked you to come to Bangalore. So I reached there and I was told to wait in the hotel where I will meet Amitabh. And then finally, when he arrived, he knew the kind of jittery person I was. He said, ‘just sit down, please, before you fall.’ I’ve got bad news for you.’”
Further, in the same conversation, Tinnu revealed that the condition even made it difficult for Amitabh to sip water. The legendary actor choked and was in a near-death situation. Tinnu elaborated:
“He asked me to cancel my schedule as he has got something called Myasthenia Gravis, which is a disease of the muscles. He said, ‘During the shoot when I was taking a sip of water, it got stuck in my throat. The message to my brain did not go that I have to swallow it, so it got stuck. I nearly died, suffocating on it.’ He explained that he has been asked to go to Bombay for a checkup and complete rest. He said the doctors had warned him that I might never be able to work again.’ I collapsed, I think he called an ambulance.”
Amitabh declared that he would quit acting because the doctor told him that continuing to work may adversely affect his health. However, life had other plans, and everything worked out in the end, and Shehensha became the highest-grosser of that year.
Tinnu Anand is one of the most versatile Bollywood actors. He started his career as an assistant director to the legendary Satyajit Ray and, over the years, has worked with all the big names in the industry. He has also directed superhit films, Kalia, Shahenshah and many more.
