Rajesh Khanna was one of the finest superstars of Bollywood. Years after his demise, he still remains an enigma in the industry. However, his personal life was not bereft of controversies. The actor was married to actress, Dimple Kapadia, but within only a decade, the marriage hit a rough patch, and they started living separately, but they never officially divorced. Years after the separation, Rajesh Khanna got into a relationship with former actress, Anita Advani, and by 2004, they were allegedly living together. Their relationship lasted until his death in 2012.
Rajesh Khanna’s alleged girlfriend, Anita Advani recently sat for an interview with Avanti Films, detailing the years she spent with the late superstar. Anita claimed that the actor lived alone for about 28 years after his separation from Dimple, until they found companionship in each other. The actress shared that Rajesh had once given her a kada, a sacred bangle, in front of a shrine of Balaji, as a token of acceptance. She shared:
“He (Rajesh) gave me a kada in front of Balaji. He accepted me.”
While Anita described Rajesh as a calm person most of the time, she alleged that his behaviour changed when he was intoxicated. The actress recalled that she sometimes used to hit the late actor as a reflex action. Anita shared:
“He would sometimes hit me. So I would hit him back. That was my reflex action. He would complain that my nail cut him.”
This is not the first time that Anita has spoken about Rajesh Khanna’s temperament issues when he was drunk. During her stint on Bigg Boss 7 in 2013, she had described him as a ‘difficult man to live with’ when drunk, but ‘the best person to be around’ when sober. In an interview with Rediff, the actress shared:
“He (Rajesh) was a difficult man to live with. After a drink or two, he could be rude. You had to really know his moves and manage him. I learnt to deal with him. Earlier, I would fight and argue with him. But he made me understand. He told me ‘Even if I am wrong, just keep quiet’. Anything could upset him. It was like he had to get angry; the reasons were never important or logical. It was really difficult. When he was drunk, he would even hurt me sometimes. But when he was not drunk, he was the best person to be around.”
Rajesh Khanna was considered one of Bollywood’s supremes who reigned the industry during the 1960s and 1970s. He held an unbeaten record of delivering 15 back-to-back solo hits. With classics such as Amar Prem, Anand, Kati Patang, and Aradhana, Rajesh was the heartthrob of an entire generation. However, Rajesh’s personal life was riddled with complexities. In addition to his failed marriage, the late actor also struggled with alcoholism.
