The Met Gala is one of the most anticipated fashion events of the year. The numerous quirky get-ups become the talk of the town, while some celebrities get popular overnight because of their fashion. But, despite the buzz that the MET Gala creates, the one person who organises the event and is the mastermind behind it, continues to remain elusive and away from most of the publicity. 

Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, organises and oversees all the details that go into throwing the biggest fashion event and charity ball, which is the MET Gala. She decides the invitations, themes, seating arrangements, food menu, and every other aspect of the gala. So here is everything you need to know about the most important person at the MET Gala.

Anna Wintour was born into a family of journalists

Anna Wintour's father, Charles Wintour, was the editor of the London-based Evening Standard newspaper. One of her younger brothers is also an editor at The Guardian. Meanwhile, Wintour's father encouraged her to work in the fashion industry and got her a job at a fashion boutique, when she was only fifteen years old. She spoke about her father in The September Issue documentary. She could be quoted as saying:

"I think my father really decided for me that I should work in fashion. "

Even as a young girl, Anna Wintour was passionate about fashion. She would shorten her skirt hemline in school, even though it was against the rules. She also started wearing her hair in her iconic bob hairstyle around this time, when she was fourteen. Wintour consumed a lot of fashion content through magazines and TV shows. Hence, her father oftentimes asked her for suggestions on content that would attract the younger audience towards his newspaper. 

Anna Wintour started her career as a fashion journalist and designed innovative photoshoots 

After working in a few boutiques, Anna Wintour was given the opportunity to explore magazine publishing and production by her former boyfriend. After that, she was hired as an editorial assistant by Harper's & Queen UK. This marked her official entry into the world of fashion journalism. Soon, she used her connections and her immense knowledge of visual arts to create innovative and unique photo shoot ideas. Wintour started to make a name for herself as a fashion journalist, but rivalry with a colleague led her to quit the company and move away to New York.

After moving away, Anna Wintour worked with many other media agencies. Some jobs worked out, and some did not. Meanwhile, the fashion journalist still held out hope to eventually become the editor of Vogue, which had been her dream since she first started working in the industry.

After a string of working with various magazines, Anna Wintour scored an interview with the editor of Vogue, Grace Mirabella. Known for her honesty and straightforwardness, Wintour frankly told Mirabella that she wanted her job. That was the end of the interview. Though Wintour did not get the job, she went on to become the creative director of Condé Nast, Vogue's parent company. 

After a good performance as the creative director, Anna Wintour was given the editorship of Vogue UK. This brought her even closer to her goal of becoming editor of the ultimate Vogue media based in the U.S.A. Meanwhile, she built up a reputation for being a hard and difficult boss to work under. After getting the editorship, Wintour changed the whole outlook of the magazine and controlled every operation to the most minute detail. 

Anna Wintour finally became editor of the Vogue and revolutionised fashion journalism 

In 1987, Anna Wintour finally achieved her life-long ambition and became the editor of Vogue. In her new role, the editor made unprecedented changes to the staff, the creative ideas behind the photoshoots, and the overall aesthetics of the magazine. She applied a natural and minimalist approach, with the models posing with almost no make-up, tousled and messy hair, and smiling faces. 

Anna Wintour inspired iconic Hollywood characters and movies 

Anna Wintour has both a distinctive personality and style. The Vogue editor has always sported her iconic bob and sunglasses. She is also known as a straightforward boss who demands more than a hundred per cent from her employees. The best in her work, she is also popular as the revolutionary who changed and popularised fashion journalism like never before. 

These unique aspects about her have inspired many Hollywood movie characters. One of her most unique portrayals was done by Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. A former assistant wrote the book, which went on to become a major screenplay with Streep starring as 'Miranda Priestly'. Apart from this film, Wintour has also been a part of many documentaries and feature films made in the fashion industry. 

Anna Wintour is the chairperson of the MET and oversees the gala 

The MET Gala is a yearly charity ball organised by the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Department Institute. Anna Wintour has been the lead chairperson of the event committee since 1995. The Vogue editor oversees the guest lists, food menu, theme and every other detail that goes into the event. 

Though the MET Gala was first started in 1973, it was mostly popular among elite fashion circles. While the general population remained unaware of it. However, expanding the guest list to include global artists from around the world, rather than just socialites and Hollywood celebrities, has made the gala one of the most anticipated fashion events for everyone. The themes decided by Anna Wintour since her chairpersonship has also encouraged quirky and experimental costumes, which have provided great entertainment to the masses. Hence, the Met Gala 2025 with the theme "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" has also garnered quite a lot of attention, with everyone being excited to see what outfits the attendees would come up with.
