Once, in an interview, Anora's director, Sean Baker, revealed that he sought inspiration for his film's story from a friend's story about a Russian-American newlywed who was kidnapped for collateral.

"I think some of it doesn't seem super genuine. Like old friends coming out of the woodwork. Ex-boyfriends reaching out to me, 'Hey, wanna grab a coffee or something.' Why? Because you've seen me on billboards?"
