Anshula Kapoor is the daughter of ace film producer, Boney Kapoor and his first wife, late, Mona Shourie. Anshula's parents separated after 13 years of marriage, and at that time, she was hardly six. For the longest time, she blamed herself for their divorce, and after the birth of her stepsister, Janhvi Kapoor, Anshula started to feel that because of her existence, Boney and Mona separated. For the unversed, after separating from Mona, Boney fell for Sridevi, with whom he was blessed with Janhvi and Khushi.
Anshula sat down for an interview with Pinkvilla and revealed she could never find 'sukoon' as she had to undergo her parents' battling separation against the entire world. She revealed that when the separation of her parents happened, it was public news, as opposed to something that one had to deal with privately. She and her family were dealing with a hundred thousand eyeballs of the world. For Anshula, the birth of her stepsister, Janhvi, kept her in guilt, and she took the blame on herself for Boney and Mona being separated. Anshula shared:
"I was about a little bit under 6 years old when that happened. I internalised it to be like 'Oh my parents separated because something is wrong in me'. As a 6 year old I thought that before I came into their lives everything was hunky dory. I came into their lives, and now suddenly they do not belong together anymore. Maybe I was not a good enough daughter, and that became more apparent after Jaanu was born because I was like maybe something was wrong with me."
Anshula is someone who has always kept herself away from the glam world, despite her family being very active in the film industry. Anshula did come into the light after she took part in The Traitors and now spoke in-depth about her parents' separation. Anshula did say that later, after Janhvi's birth, she realised that it was not her fault, but as a child, she was trying to figure out if she had made any mistake and blamed herself.
When Anshula looked back at her childhood, she realised that, unlike her contemporaries, it was not at all normal for her. She does have significant good memories of her childhood, but she had to grow up sooner than the other contemporaries and friends of her age, as normalcy was not defined as it was for the rest. For the unversed, after Anshula's parents got separated, she spent most of her childhood with her brother, Arjun Kapoor and her mom, Mona. She even confessed that at her time, single-parent families were seen as a stigma to society and some people kept their distance from her. The reason that Anshula cited for being different from the other kids was, in her words:
"Who knows maybe I heard some conversation with some aunty or friend. I may have heard some random words from their conversation and cooked something entirely different in my head. That was one part of my trauma I had to deal with. I have addressed this with my siblings, family and parents.”
What are your views on Anshula Kapoor blaming herself as the cause of her parents' separation after the birth of Janhvi Kapoor?
