Anupama Parameswaran is one of the most popular actresses in the South Indian film industry. She works predominantly in Tamil and Telugu. The actress has also worked in some Malayalam films. Although she made a dazzling debut with the Malayalam film, Premam, which was a box office hit, she went on to become a prominent actress in the Telugu industry. Now, the Premam actress is all set to make a comeback in Malayalam film with Pravin Narayanan’s Janaki vs State of Kerala. In the film’s audio launch, she also revealed behind her hiatus from Malayalam movies.
At the film launch of her upcoming Malayalam movie in Kochi, Kerala, on June 16, 2025, Anupama revealed that she agreed to the Malayalam project, Janaki vs State of Kerala, after deciding that she would commit to Malayalam films only if the project excites her. She also went on to reveal the cause behind her hiatus from Malayalam films and stated that many trolled her by saying that she couldn’t act. Anupama shared that it was Janaki vs State of Kerala’s (JSK) director, Pravin Narayanan, who gave her the opportunity to appear in a prominent lead role in the upcoming film. For the unversed, Anupama will be seen playing the role of 'Janaki' in the film, JSK. In her words:
"Many people rejected me in Malayalam, saying I didn’t know how to act. I also faced a lot of trolling. Irrespective of all of that, this film’s director, Pravin Narayanan cast me as the lead character. This movie has a heart and it is Janaki, and thank you for entrusting me with her. I did JSK at a time when I decided I will only commit movies that excite me in Malayalam."
Anupama also shared how she had a huge transformation in her career and life during the pandemic. The actress also mentioned her character in the upcoming film, JSK and thanked the director, Pravin, for having faith in her. Anupama also thanked everyone, including her haters and said that the hatred made her build up a better version of herself. In her words:
"I went through a huge transformation in my career and life during the COVID lockdown, and I immensely appreciate Pravin for showing faith in me, to pull off such a deep character. The movie revolves around a strong female character, and I am thankful that Pravin trusted me with her. That in itself feels like an achievement. I am thankful to everyone - those who have supported me as well as those who hated me - for making me who I am today."
After Anupama spoke her heart out about being choosy about Malayalam projects, Suresh Gopi shared some experiences of other prominent actresses, including Nayanthara, Simran and Asin who had gone through similar incidents. For the uninitiated, Suresh Gopi will share the screen space with Anupama in the upcoming Malayalam film, JSK. Suresh also motivated Anupama by stating that just like the other actresses, there will also be one day in her life, when directors who once rejected her, will be chasing her for dates. In his words:
"Anupama spoke from the heart. And this is not the first time something like this has happened. I know the truth; Simran was one such actress who was disregarded and let go by the Malayalam industry. But later, I personally know of top directors who went after her, hoping to cast her as the lead in Malayalam films. Actors like Asin and Nayanthara blossomed into leading ladies admired across multiple languages. The same will happen in Anupama’s life too. This is what we call karma. It is bound to happen. My prayers are with her."
