Asha Bhosle's Daughter, Varsha Once Questioned Her For Not Giving Time After Being Single Parent

Asha Bhosle's daughter, Varsha, died by suicide in 2012. Cut to 2025, her mom took her last breath on March 12, 2026, after Asha was admitted to Mumbai's Breach Candy hospital for a chest infection. Asha's life was not a bed of roses, and her daughter, Varsha, had not pursued a career like her mom. Asha was in a toxic marriage with her first ex-husband, Ganpatrao. Varsha remembered the time when her mom had told her how she never wanted to be at the mercy of anyone else.

Asha Bhosle's daughter, Varsha, revealed that her mom did not want to be at the mercy of anyone

When Asha Bhosle left Ganpatrao's house with her kids, Varsha revealed that her mom had returned to her grandmother, aunties, and uncles. However, the memories she has of Aai are not yet that bright. Varsha had revealed that she had once asked her mom about the roof's security. She could have given time to her kids. However, Varsha revealed that her mother, Asha, had taught her not to be dependent on anyone, and Varsha, who used to write for Rediff, said:

"Never again did I want to be at the mercy of anyone else. It would have been equally harmful for you three. You had to grow up in your own home, and with the freedom I alone could sanction. We did, we did."

When Varsha Bhosle spoke about her mom, Asha, being deserted

Varsha had revealed that Asha had sent her and her siblings to school and spoiled them with luxuries. She has never had enough and appreciated how a single parent managed to merge the roles of provider and home-maker, which is beyond his comprehension. Varsha also remembered the time that Asha realised that enough was enough. One day, it struck her that her third and advanced state of pregnancy may not be able to sustain the daily dose of bashing. One fine day, Asha left behind every single paisa she had earned, her bungalow, her car, even her clothes, and had taken refuge with Mai Mangeshkar. In the words of Varsha:

"It's a sore point in my life that she found the courage to do so only when my younger brother Anand was to be born. Of course, there were instant theories in the industry about this 'desertion', and I'm sure that there were many who were disappointed when Anand grew up to be fortunately, only in appearance a replica of our father."

Varsha Bhosle once revealed that for her mom, Asha, living in the industry was not easy

Varsha then revealed that when Asha became independent, she became a textbook case of rebellion. Speaking of the movie industry, Varsha had mentioned that, like their society at large, they were saturated with prejudice, hypocrisy and factionism. Varsha revealed that Asha was branded as a fallen woman, and it didn't help that the closest comparable rival was her own sister, Lata Mangeshkar. Asha's musical career journey was not at all easy, and Varsha mentioned:

"But, if anyone so much as suggested something to alleviate the situation, you could bank on Asha Bhosle to do the opposite. After more than a decade of suppression, and of keeping the shame of her squalid married life from her family and colleagues, she simply revelled in her absolute freedom. What still fascinates me is the total honesty and fearlessness with which she lived, as if to say, My life is an open book, make of it what you will."

Varsha did reveal that her Aai excelled in all genres, but Hindi film-makers were ticklish about giving their on-screen singers the voice of recognition. Like, if the character had a western appeal, it was Asha's voice that helped compose the most memorable music, that too for Hindi cinema's heroines.
