Lata ji had celebrated her 90th birthday on September 28, 2019, and it was a day to remember and all her fans and family members had wished her with good health. But unfortunately, it was on the wee hours of November 11, 2019, that Lata ji was rushed to the Breach Candy Hospital and was kept in the Intensive Care Unit after she had faced acute breathing issues. Sharing an update about Lata ji’s health, a source had then shared with the PTI, “She was brought to the hospital at about 2 am. She is critical and in the ICU.” After spending a day at the hospital, Lata ji was allowed to discharge but her sister, Usha Mangeshkar had thought that it would be better to keep her there for 1-2 days more.

After being hospitalised for almost 28 days at the Breach Candy Hospital, Lata ji was discharged last week. Her entire family was waiting for her arrival and it was her sister, Asha Bhosle who shared her happiness with the Mid-Day. Asha ji confirmed that her sister is all hale and hearty and also added that she was all emotional after seeing her that all her songs came rushing to her. Asha ji stated, “We were all there for her homecoming. She is back and we are overjoyed. She is looking hale and hearty. I was looking at her last night, and at once, so many songs that she has made immortal with her voice came back rushing to me.”
On December 8, 2019, Lata ji had taken to her official Twitter handle and had updated all her fans and followers about her health. In the tweet, she had stated, “For the past 28 days, I was at Breach Candy hospital. I was diagnosed with pneumonia. The doctors preferred that I extend my stay in the hospital and go home when completely healthy. My doctors at Breach Candy have been my guardian angels and I stand in eternal gratitude to each one of them. The nursing staff has been exceptional. Your endless love and blessings are precious.”
When Lata ji was about to get discharged, it was her sister, Usha Mangeshkar, who had taken the decision of keeping her under doctors’ observation in the hospital. There were reports that Lata ji was discharged, but a report by SpotboyE had put an end to all the speculations and had confirmed that Lata ji would be staying in the hospital. Her sister, Usha ji was quoted as saying, “Lata Didi is 90. She is better and doctors were okay if we wanted to take her home today. But we ourselves told them that considering her age, it is better if we keep her in the hospital for 1 or 2 days more. She will be fine. She had developed a viral fever and a stomach issue. Aajkal medicines aur technology achchi hai, so it works. But again, as I said she is 90, so we thought that it would be better that we don't treat her at home." It was on September 28, 2019, when Lata Mangeshkar had turned 90 years old and for the same, her sister, Asha Bhonsle had taken to Instagram and posting two nostalgic black-and-white pictures, had penned, “Aaj meri badi behen, @mangeshkar.lata ka janamdin hai! Vo 90 baras ki hui hai! Aap sabko maloom hai ki vo Bharat ki shaan hai. Janamdin ki shubhkamnayein.” Not just this, Asha ji had also treated her fans by posting an adorable picture from Lata ji’s cake-cutting ceremony, wherein they were seen trying to capture an image of the birthday cake.
Some time back, rumours had it that Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar were not on talking terms with each other. In an interaction with the Hindustan Times in 2016, refuting all the rumours about their differences, Lata ji had stated, “This talk of our differences has been blown out of all proportions over the years. We are sisters first and foremost, and forever. We were never rivals as singers. What Asha can do before the mike I can never do. I can never sing Piya tu ab to aaja or Chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko the way she can. My point is, we had our own individual space as singers. Why would we be seen as rivals? Yeh bilkul galat hai.”
She had further added, “People say all kinds of things about our relationship. There’s no fight between us. Until some years back we lived in adjoining flats and there was a connecting door between our homes. We were constantly in and out of one another’s homes. At a tender age, Asha left home and got married. And she made a big name for herself. I’m very proud of her. We share a very healthy relationship. There is no stress. Whenever Asha has a show, she seeks my blessings first. I’ve heard her lyric-book has my picture in it. My relationship with none of my siblings is troubled. I fulfil the function of the eldest with all my siblings. I am fortunate to have such siblings.” (Must Read: Amy Jackson's Son, Andreas Jax Panayiotou Looks Like A Cotton Ball In His Half Asleep Pictures)
