On October 2, 1942, one of the greatest actresses in the history of Indian cinema, Asha Parekh was born in Mumbai and was destined to rule the city one day. Apart from being an exceptional dancer, a bubbly actress, and versatile in her craft, Asha Parekh was every director's dream actress. Some of her most memorable performances were in the films, Kati Patang, Teesri Manzil, Dil Deke Dekho, Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai, Love In Tokyo, Upkar, Baharon Ke Sapne, Pyar Ka Mausam, Aan Milo Sajna, and Caravan.
The actress has been honoured with tons of awards and accolades; however, the one that shines the most in her trophy cabinet is the Padma Shri, which she received from the Government of India in 1992. However, on September 27, 2022, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced that Asha Parekh would receive the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke award for her contribution to Indian cinema.
With so many awards to her name and millions of fans across the world, it is always quite astonishing to realise that Asha Parekh never found someone worth marrying. However, once in an interview, she opened up about the time when she finally decided that marriage was something that wasn't meant for her, at least in this life.
Once in a candid interview with the Verve Magazine, the legendary actress, Asha Parekh opened up about her decision to remain unmarried for the rest of her life. Reflecting on the experiences and things that convinced her to stay away from the institution of marriage, Asha Parekh admitted that she held no regrets. The actress was asked to name the person, who made her firm about her decision not ever to get married. Answering this, the actress shared that once, she was in love with a professor from the United States of America. Asha Parekh admitted that she was in love with the professor, and they were planning to get married.
Going further in the interview, Asha Parekh shared that she was quite serious about that professor and recalled the day when he broke her with a sensitive confession about himself. Recalling that tragic night, when she was having a great time with her then-boyfriend in a cafe, the actress stated that the professor was already dating another girl. Yes! The man was double-dating with Asha Parekh and informed her about the same when she started getting quite serious about getting married. The confession broke her heart because the actress was deeply in love with him. In her words:
"I did come very close to tying the knot once with a professor from the US. I was visiting him and we were in a cafe at 2 a.m., when he turned to me and nonchalantly said, 'I have a girlfriend and you've come in the way'. It completely caught me off guard. In a way, that was the final straw for me in this whole wedding business."
After coming back to India, Asha Parekh was quite convinced that marriage was something that wasn't her cup of tea in this life. However, despite her ugly breakup with the professor, Asha was still thinking about him and decided to approach him once again on his birthday. The actress convinced herself that this would be the last shot of her life towards love and chose his birthday as the perfect day to mend their ways. It wasn't easy for the actress, who didn't have the most impressive record when it came to love.
Recalling the same, Asha Parekh had shared that when she called the professor, who wasn't expecting her call, he had started rambling over the call. However, he was talking in Gujarati, which was a clear hint for the actress that he was in bed with his girlfriend. That was the last time Asha had tried her luck in love. She had explained:
"However, his birthday came around a few months later and I expectantly sent him presents, hoping to give the relationship another shot. When I called him, he began rambling in Gujarati and that seemed odd to me because we normally conversed in English. That's when I learnt that he was in bed with his girlfriend while talking to me. It upset me, and I took it quite badly for a while, but eventually, I got over it. I am a firm believer of the phrase 'This too shall pass'. And it did."
For the unversed, Asha Parekh was also in love with Nasir Hussain, but she knew that the latter was a married man. Hence, she had never thought about it. But her eternal love for him still speaks volumes about the kind of personality she is in real life. Indeed, a lady filled with compassion, empathy, and love!
