It has been 31 years since the motorsports world lost one of its brightest racers, Ayrton Senna, but his legacy still continues and will go on for long. Senna, a name that triggers emotions, inspiration and admiration, was more than simply a Formula One racer. He was a symbol of undying passion and unmatched skill.
His influence crosses borders, professions and generations. From a young child aspiring to become a racer to veteran racers and even for celebrities outside racing, Senna remains as a guiding light. A recent tribute by Tamil superstar and professional racer, Ajith Kumar at Senna’s memorial, acts like a reminder of how deeply this legend still touches and connects with people’s hearts.
Ayrton Senna was born on March 21, 1960, in Brazil. He was a star in racing. He started racing karts at the age of 13 and by the early 1980s, he had made his way into Formula One. His rise in the racing world was amazing and fans quickly realised that they were witnessing an extraordinary talent. His performance in the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix is still regarded as one of the greatest drives in F1 history, even though he finished second.
Senna’s career lasted only for a decade, but he left an impact for a lifetime on people. He was more than just a racer. Senna was a philosopher off the track, known for his deep spirituality and philosophical ideas about life, death, and competition. On the track, he was a warrior, respected for his intensity, particularly in wet conditions where he was nearly unbeatable.
Ayrton Senna won three Formula One World Championships (1988, 1990, 1991), all with McLauren. He had 41 wins, 65 pole positions, 19 fastest laps, 80 podiums in Formula One and countless moments of pure excellence. Senna was especially known for his performances in the rain, where he seemed to go against physics. His victory at the 1993 European Grand Prix, where he overtook four drivers in the opening lap on a wet track, is still considered one of the greatest laps in F1 history.

He had iconic rivalries, especially with French driver Alain Prost, which defined an entire era of Formula One. But more than the trophies, it was Senna’s commitment to perfection and his fearless approach that made him unforgettable. He once said that “Being second is to be the first of the ones who lose”. This quote by him perfectly describes his love for racing.
May 1, 1994, is the date every Formula One fan remembers. Something that started as a weekend of racing at the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy, turned into one of the most tragic events. On the seventh lap of the race, Ayrton Senna's Williams FW16 drifted off the track at the high-speed Tamburello circuit and crashed with a concrete barrier at approximately 310 km/h. Senna was airlifted and taken to a hospital, but later, he was declared dead, at the age of 34, because of major head injuries. His death raised safety issues and in the upcoming years sweeping safety reforms were introduced, ranging from improved car construction to track redesigns, ensuring no driver would die in F1 for the next two decades.
Senna’s story is not just about racing, it is about human spirit, resilience and legacy. More than anything else, Senna’s memory lives on because of how he represented Brazil with immense pride, how he used his fame to fund education for underprivileged children through the Instituto Ayrton Senna and how he carried a spiritual energy in everything he did. His dedication to self-improvement, his fearless nature in the car, and his soft-spoken personality off the track have made him a universal icon, not just in sport but in life itself. Examples of his dedication are used till date. People across professions consider him his idol and inspiration.
Tamil superstar, Ajith Kumar, who has been admired a lot for his passion for motorsports was recently seen paying a tribute to his idol, Aryton Senna, at the legendary Formula One driver’s memorial in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The video was shared on the Ajith Kumar Racing page on Instagram. The post was flooded with love, with heart and fire emojis all over the comment section. Fans also described it as a goosebumps moment.
