Babil Khan Shared His 'Baba', Irrfan's 'Piku' Is A Masterpiece, Calls Shoojit Sircar A Father Figure

Irrfan Khan's Piku became a fan favourite when it was released a decade ago on May 8, 2015. Shoojit Sircar's directorial marvel starred Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone as well. The film won immense critical acclaim for impeccable storytelling, which was sprinkled with just the right amount of humour and a sensitive portrayal of mortality through a father-daughter relationship. Now, the late actor's son, Babil Khan, has opened up about his views on the film and the bond he shares with the director.

Piku became a cult film over the years, with fans being absolutely in love with Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone's equation in the film. Irrfan won everyone's hearts with his carefree nature, and the ending left everyone in tears. The film went on to earn three National Film Awards and a place as one of the most loved Bollywood films. As the film marks a decade since its release, Irrfan's son, Babil, shared his thoughts on the film during a conversation with News18.

Babil Khan called Piku a masterpiece and cited a dialogue that he absolutely loved. He recalled that his father, Irrfan's character in a scene, asked Deepika Padukone's character about who one was if they lost their roots. Babil added that as he goes through life, he finds it to be even truer. He was quoted as saying:

"I think Piku is a masterpiece. In the film, there’s a dialogue that baba says to Deepika’s character. He asks her, who’re you without your roots and if you lose your roots, then who’re you? As I go along with my life, that line becomes truer for me. That’s why I say that Shoojit da takes me back to my roots."

In the same conversation, Babil Khan revealed that he served as an intern for the camera department during Piku's shoot. He added that it was filmmaker, Shoojit Sircar's storytelling that left a deep impact on him. For the unversed, Shoojit also shared a close bond with the Logout actor's late father, Irrfan.

In the same conversation, Babil Khan revealed that Shoojit Sircar is like a father figure to him. He shared that the filmmaker has played a crucial part in keeping him sane. He added that he appreciates his bond with Shoojit so much that he would do anything the latter asked of him. He was quoted as saying:

"Shoojit da is a father figure to me. He has been a very, very important part of my sanity and in a very practical way. He comes to visit me and tells me, 'Clean your room first and then we’ll talk.' So, I cleaned my room quickly because I really wanted to talk to him. After that, he tells me that since I’ve enough space to play football, I should start dribbling the ball."

Babil Khan recalled his father, Irrfan, once told the reporter that he was doing nothing

In the same conversation, he recalled how his father, Irrfan, was once asked by an interviewer what Babil planned to do in the future. He added that since he was learning filmmaking at the time, his father resigned and stated that he was not doing anything. However, at the time, Irrfan was not aware that his son would soon follow in his footsteps and become an actor.
