Tragedy struck when Bharti Singh’s father passed away when she was just two years old. The family of four was left shattered. Bharti doesn’t even remember her father’s face, as there were no pictures of him at their home. At the age of 22, Bhart’s mother had to take responsibility, and she single-handedly raised her three children.
In an interview with Pinkvilla, Bharti revealed why her mother never thought of a second marriage and said:
“My mother got married at a very young age of 15 and by the time she was 22, she had three children. My father passed away very early and my mom was left alone with us. So many people suggested my mother to get married again and they got her marriage proposals from men who already had 2 children. But she refused to marry and said that her family will be spilt.”
After her father’s death, Bharti’s mother did all types of work. She worked in factories, cleaned toilets, worked as a maid, and saw all types of hardships. In an interview with Neena Gupta for Brut India, Bharti revealed that her mother would feed them with leftover food given to her from the houses she worked in. Talking about the same, she said:
“Mummy doosron ke ghar kaam karti thi main baithi rehti thi. Toilet saaf karti thi. Phir wo sabzi bachi rehti thi to bolte the le jaana bach gayi hai. Unki baasi sabzi hamari fresh ho jaati thi. Hamara poora din ban jaata tha.”
For somebody who has seen hardships in her home, the struggle in her professional life was just a cakewalk. Bharti sought solace by seeking refuge in various auditions and NCC camps. During one of the auditions, comedian, Sudesh Lahiri noticed her talent and cast her in a play. Bharti Singh’s destiny changed when Kapil Sharma recognised her talent and asked her to audition for the show, The Great India Laughter Challenge, where she ended up being the second runner-up.

“When I did my first show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, we got a hotel stay sponsored by the show. I and my mother had this habit of eating only home-cooked meals and by consuming hotel food for several days my mother got a stomach ulcer, she was in the ICU and I had to go to my shoot and make people laugh for the semifinals of the show on that day."
