Bharti Singh is a name that made millions of fans across the globe as she tickled people’s laughter bones with her standup comedy. Though she made people laugh, happiness was a distant dream for this ace comedian, who faced a lot of struggles during her childhood. Bharti is one of the most followed celebrities, often discussing her poverty-stricken life.
In an interview with Neena Gupta for Brut India, the comedienne recalled her painful childhood and how she and her family survived on people’s leftover food. Bharti’s mother used to work as a house help, and she would feed her kids whatever leftovers she got. Recalling how she once wanted to eat an apple from the dustbin as she was hungry, Bharti stated:
“Log aadha apple khaakar kachre mein phenk dete the to mujhe lagta tha ise paap chadhega. Wo dustbin mein phenk dete the to main sochti thi ye nikaal ke wo aadha bacha hissa kaat ke khaa lun. Yahan tak meri soch gayi hai. Itni gareebi thi.”
In the same interview, Bharti revealed that she hated festivals as they had no money to celebrate them. She also reminisced about watching kids burn crackers while she clapped. Elaborating on her painful past, Bharti said:
“Gareebi mein aise haalaat hote the ki main kyaa bataaun. Festival aate hain, bacche khush ho jaate hain. Festival aata tha main depression mein chali jaati thi. Hamare paas kuch nahi tha. Meri maa jab kaam karke mithaai ka dabba laati thi tab hamare ghar diwali ki pooja hoti thi. Warna hum baithe rehte the. Gali mein doosre bacche pataakhe jalate the to main unke saath jaakar taali bajane lagti thi ki sabko lage ki ye patakhe maine jalaaye hain.”
Going further in the interview, Bharti shared that people’s leftover food used to become fresh food for them. In her words:
“Mummy doosron ke ghar kaam karti thi main baithi rehti thi. Toilet saaf karti thi. Phir wo sabzi bachi rehti thi to bolte the le jaana bach gayi hai. Unki baasi sabzi hamari fresh ho jaati thi. Hamara poora din ban jaata tha.”
Bharti rose to fame with her character 'Lalli' in the comedy reality show, The Great Indian Laughter Challenge Season 4. It was her sheer dedication towards her work, which had made her a star overnight. For Bharti, her mother is the most amazing woman, who left her settled life in Amritsar to help her daughter pursue her career in the industry. In an interview with BollywoodLife, Bharti talked about her mother and stated that if she hadn’t taken the initiative to bring her to The Laughter Challenge auditions, there would have been no Bharti Singh.
In 2017, Bharti married scriptwriter Haarsh Limbachiyaa, and the adorable couple was blessed with a baby boy in April 2022.
