'Bohurupi' Movie Review: Shiboprasad Mukherjee's Film Shows Reason For Unemployment In '90s Bengal

Are you unable to find something great to watch on the OTT? If you are a Bengali cinephile who likes to gorge on macher jhol bhaat (fish curry and rice) and want to watch something that has action, drama and mystery, in not your Bollywood version. Shiboprasad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy's Bohurupi (performers) is a film set in urban Kolkata. The narrative is based around the true story of a gang of robbers who walk as Bohurupis. The movie, released on October 8, 2024, during the Durga Puja time had crossed the Rs. 10 crore mark at the box office. According to a report by The Times of India, the film had sold more than 1,000 tickets in an hour.

Bohurupi movie is not your normal crime drama film

The backbone of the movie is 'Bikram' a.k.a Shiboproshad Mukherjee. His life changes when he gets framed for the murder of a leader of the mill where 'Bikram' was an accountant. Bikram faces five years in jail, and his family, as well as the mill workers, also suffer. The film has been inspired by the real-life bank robberies that took place during the '90s and the '2000s. 'Bikram's' life changes when he is wrongly accused. The jute mill worker is tortured for a crime he never committed. 'Bikram' does not keep quiet. He changes the system and becomes a legend in robbing banks.

'Bikram' uses his theatrical skills and becomes the robber who escapes under the nose of the cops. Then there is 'SI, Sumanto Ghoshal', who is manhunting the robbers. 'Bikram's' robbery shows the faces of corrupt government officials due to whom unemployment ran in Bengal in the '90s. 'Bikram's' character shows the perfect viewpoint of Bengal, along with the cinematography and picturisation that has a folklore setting. When the film was released in 2024, during the second weekend, it made Rs. 7.71 crores in Bengal. When it was released nationwide, the numbers skyrocketed. The movie was the highest-grossing Bengali movie of 2024 and celebrated 100 days at the box office.

Abir Chatterjee, Ritabhari Chakraborty, Koushani Mukherjee, and Shiboprosad Mukherjee's cast bring life to the Bengali cinema

Abir Chatterjee plays the role of 'Sumanta Ghoshal, who is an honest police officer and is baffled by the corruption in the system. In rage, he puts 'Bikram' in jail, and he has a lot of hatred for the cop. Shiboprosad Mukherjee plays the role of 'Bikram' precisely that you would forget that he is acting. Abir Chatterjee brings an unseen side of himself, and then there is Ritabhari Chakraborty and Koushani Mukherjee. They played the role of 'Pori' and J'himli'. 'Koushani' is shown to be 'Bikram's' love interest and later becomes his wife.

Bohurupi is not your regular action movie, the music is poetry in motion

The film does not just have running, chasing and hitting scenes. It is one of those Bengali thriller films that gives you the perfect chills. The narrative is emotional as well as compelling and deals with themes like identity, justice, and social rejection. The music by Anupam Roy and Bonnie Chakraborty delivers moving, haunting and catchy tracks that stay in your head for a long time. While the storyline is around the battle of the administrators to catch the crook, the music is impactful. There are songs like Shimul Polash, Dakatiya Banshi, ‘Aj Shara Bela Bohurupi that have captured the hearts and minds of the listeners.
