It was in 1954 when the Filmfare Awards were introduced for the first time in Indian cinema. However, back in that time, it was called by the name, The Clares. For the unversed, the awards were named after the world-famous film critic, Clare Mendonca, who used to work in India with The Times Of India. After her early death in 1953 at the age of almost 43 years, The Clares were announced in her honour.
However, in the latter years, the name of the famous film awards was changed to Filmfare Awards. Even after so many years, it is still regarded as the biggest movie awards in India. Over the years, we have seen so many iconic actors and actresses lifting ‘The Black Lady’. If we go by the history books, late legendary actors, Dilip Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan are tied at the top with 8 Filmfare Awards for Best Actor.

One of the greatest actors ever, the ‘He-Man’ of the Indian film industry, Dharmendra needs no introduction. However, despite giving so many stellar performances in iconic films like Sholay, Satyakam, Do Chor, Alibaba Aur 40 Chor, Phool Aur Patthar, Dharam Veer, Seeta Aur Geeta, and many more, he never won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. In a five-decade-long career, Dharmendra had featured in more than 250 movies, and it is indeed highly surprising to know that he never won a Best Actor award.
Another iconic actor in the list is Rajendra Kumar, who is also known by the title ‘Jubilee Kumar’. He is also among the unfortunate actors, who never received the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. However, there was a time when Rajendra Kumar’s name was enough to pack the theatres, irrespective of the film’s story or genre, as people just wanted to see him act on the big screen.
In his illustrious career, he has given hits like Dhool Ka Phool, Goonj Uthi Shehnai, Kanoon, Mere Mehboob, Hamrahi, Gehra Daag, Dil Ek Mandir, Sangam, Arzoo, and the list goes on.
The kind of actors that the Kapoor clan has given to the Hindi cinema over the years needs special mention. Over the generations, we have seen so many incredibly talented actors and actresses, who took the stature of Hindi cinema to a whole new level. One such Kapoor was Shashi Kapoor, who is still regarded as one of the most loved actors from this so-called first film family of India.
The actor never won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor, but his movies are still in everyone’s hearts. Some of his evergreen movies are the likes of Deewar, Sharmeelee, Kabhie Kabhie, Trishul, Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Suhaag, Haseena Maan Jayegi, Kalyug, and many more.
Legendary actor, Shatrughan Sinha is still one of the most unique actors in the history of Hindi cinema. While actors used to practice for hours in order to create an angry young man look on the big screen, it wasn’t the case with Shatrughan Sinha, as he always had that aura with him right from the beginning. Despite ruling the box office to being the inspiration of so many actors, who came after him, he still stands apart in the list of iconic actors in Hindi cinema.
Despite giving so many hits like Kaala Patthar, Shaan, Kalicharan, Dostana, Naseeb, Jaggu, Blackmail, and Kranti, Shatrughan Sinha never won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. While it is painful to digest this fact, there’s no denying that Shatrughan Sinha is one of the most respected actors in the history of Indian cinema, which is indeed bigger than any award in the world.

Bollywood’s 'Khiladi Kumar', Akshay Kumar is another mega-star on the list who has never received a Filmfare Award for Best Actor in his illustrious career. The exceptional actor has proved the mettle of his versatility with his work in both commercial and concept-based films.
However, despite so much success at the box office, it is hard to understand the reason why he never got one. Akshay’s rich filmography consists of films like Hera Pheri, Special 26, Pad Man, Khakee, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Jolly LLB 2, Khiladi, Namastey London, Welcome, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Houseful, and many more.
In the 90s, there was a time when it was getting impossible for any actor to grab viewers’ attention when they were up against Suniel Shetty in a scene. The iconic actor is not just renowned for his action but for his incredible versatility as an actor.
With movies like Mohra, Takkar, Dhadkan, Border, Gopi Kishan and Main Hoon Na to his name, he never lifted the Black Lady for the Best Actor in his entire career.
There’s no denying the fact that Ajay Devgn is undoubtedly the only actor, who has managed to stun the audience with his performances in an era where Khans were leading all the limelight. The actor has transitioned exceptionally well over the decades in different genres. From action to comedy roles and playing serious characters, Ajay has been the epitome of versatility in Bollywood.
Talking about Ajay Devgn’s filmography, some of his films are truly timeless. Some of them are the likes of The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Company, Gangaajal, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, Singham, Drishyam, Apaharan, Halla Bol, Dilwale, and many more.

The critically-acclaimed filmmaker, Tigmanshu Dhulia had once said that there’s no actress better than Tabu in the last 20 years of Indian cinema. Well, while some may find it quite exaggerated, we can tell you that it is not. If we go by the kind of roles Tabu has done in her career, one can understand the reason why Tigmanshu gave such a massive statement about her.
Some of the best films of Tabu’s acting career are Chandni Bar, Virasat, Vijaypath, Maachis, Astitva, Maqbool, Haider, The Namesake, Drishyam, Andhadhun, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and many more. However, despite working for so long in the film industry, Tabu never received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress ever in her career.
One of the most gorgeous and incredibly-talented actresses to ever grace the big screen in Bollywood is Urmila Matondkar. However, undoubtedly she is also incredibly underrated. Despite ruling the big screens for decades, she never received the kind of appreciation and mention from the critics and award producers.
Some of Urmila’s notable performances that still serve as a benchmark for many actresses are Rangeela, Pinjar, Satya, Ek Hasina Thi, Bhoot, Kaun?, I Did Not Kill Gandhi, Gaayam, Judaai, Indian, and many more. However, despite giving so many memorable performances, she never won a Filmfare Award for Best Actress in a leading role.
In the late 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s, it was Mala Sinha, whose name was on top of almost every film director’s casting chart. Not just in Hindi, but Mala worked in Bengali and Nepali cinema too. Some of her most notable work was in the films, Maryada, Night In London, Pyassa, Paisa ya Pyaar, Pooja Ke Phool, Rivaaj, Anpadh, Himalay Ki Goodh Mein, Gumrah, Karmayogi, Geet, and Mere Huzoor.
In her career, she was nominated on four occasions for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, but she never won one. It’s still regarded as some of the biggest robberies in Indian cinema to see an actress of Mala Sinha’s calibre without a Black Lady in her trophy cabinet.
Last but not the least in the list is the superstar, Govinda. The iconic actor gave a brand new meaning to stardom and cemented his status as one of the most talented dancers, actors, and comedians ever. In his illustrious career, he had worked with some of the biggest actors of his generation and gave so many hits. However, despite all the commercial success, he never won a Filmfare Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
It's shocking and too hard to understand why an actor, who had given so much to Indian cinema, never won the Best Actor award. Govinda did almost 140 Hindi films in his career, and every film is worth a watch, especially for the young actors, who want to become superstars one day. The reason behind it is the beautiful fact that 'Chi-Chi' always delivered his 100% in every single role he played, which is why he is an inspiration for so many people out there.
No doubt, all the names mentioned in the list are pure shockers, but who is that one actor or actress, whose name in this list shocked you? Let us know.
