The cold-blooded assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk has taken a bizarre turn after authorities revealed that one of the bullets found at the scene carried an inscription that was also prominently featured in Netflix’s Spanish crime series, La Casa de Papel (Money Heist). But the connection runs deeper.
On September 10, 2025, 31-year-old Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during an event at Utah Valley University; US President Donald Trump later confirmed his death. After hours of a manhunt, on September 11, Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed that the alleged shooter was a 22-year-old Utah resident, Tyler Robinson. He has since been taken into custody after his own father urged him to surrender.
After Robinson’s arrest, the authorities are unearthing chilling new details of the case, which disturbingly reflect just how deep the alleged shooter’s hatred ran for Kirk. The rifle ammunition found at the crime scene had engraved messages, each more chilling than the other. One particular bullet had the engravings of Italian words, 'O Bella ciao, Bella ciao, Bella ciao, Ciao ciao!'
‘Bella Ciao’ (‘Goodbye, Beautiful’) is a well-known phrase from a 19th-century Italian folk song that became an anthem of resistance during World War II. Anti-fascist partisans rallied on the streets of Italy by singing this song in protest against Nazi and fascist forces. With time, it spread worldwide, evolving into a hymn of protest against oppression.
Fast forward to 2017, the WWII resistance anthem became a global pop culture sensation with the exploding success of the Spanish crime drama La Casa de Papel (Money Heist). The series reintroduced Bella Ciao to millions worldwide, popularising it among the new generation.

In the show, Bella Ciao becomes a symbol of rebellion when ‘The Professor’ (Álvaro Morte) and ‘Berlin’ (Pedro Alonso) sing it in defiance against the system. They frame their heist as not just a crime but an uprising against a system they saw as unjust. As ‘Tokyo’ (Úrsula Corberó) says in the show:
"The life of The Professor revolved around one idea: Resistance. His grandfather, who had fought against the fascists in Italy, taught him the song, and he taught it to us.”
From then on, the anthem has topped music charts and become a synonym of resistance in pop culture.
According to Governor Cox and a probable-cause statement filed in court on September 12, 2025, investigators recovered ammunition from the shooting that carried bizarre engravings. The messages included “O Bella ciao, Bella ciao, Bella ciao ciao ciao!” and “Hey fascist! CATCH!” followed by a sequence of five arrow symbols; “If you read this, you are GAY lmao”; and on a spent casing, “Notices bulge, OwO what’s this?”
While Cox leaves the engravings up for open interpretation, investigators believe Robinson’s engravings may signal a politically charged intention behind Kirk’s assassination. A family member of Robinson reportedly recalled the 22-year-old mentioning his hate for the conservative leader. Tyler also reportedly shared during a family dinner:
"Kirk was full of hate and spreading hate."
Charlie Kirk was just 31 and was slowly building a happy family of four with his wife, Erika, and their two toddlers. His unexpected demise has now left the family to grapple with the unimaginable. Kirk’s political ally, Jack Posobiec, described Erika as ‘unbelievably strong’, but she’s having a hard time explaining to their kids that ‘daddy isn't coming home.’ Posobiec stated:
"Erika is unbelievably strong. At the same time, someone's going to have to explain to his son and daughter why their dad didn't come home yesterday."
Charlie and Erika celebrated their fourth anniversary in May 2025 and are parents to two toddlers — a three-year-old daughter and a one-year-old son. Erika is now leaning on the deep faith the couple shared. Amid the mix of hate and heartfelt support from the nation, on September 12, 2025, Erika spoke up. In her first public appearance after the tragedy on CBS Live, Erika stated:
“He loved his life. He loved America. He loved nature, which always helped bring him closer to God. He loved the Chicago Cubs, and my goodness, did he love the Oregon Ducks. Most of all, Charlie loved his children, and he loved me with all of his heart, and I knew that every day.”
In the heartbreaking speech, Erika shared an agonising moment from the night she returned home after Charlie's death, when their three-year-old daughter asked, ‘Where’s daddy?’ Unable to control her tears, Erika recalled her response:
“I said, ‘Baby, daddy loves you so much. Don’t you worry. He’s on a work trip with Jesus so he can afford your blueberry budget.’”
As the investigation continues, the haunting discovery of a 'Bella Ciao' inscription raises many unanswered questions about Charlie Kirk's murder. What is your take on the bizarre inscriptions?
